Why Do Associates Need HAZCOM Training? OSHA says: • 650,000 hazardous chemical products • 30 million exposed workers • 7,000 citations issued for violations of the HCS • 2nd most frequently cited OSHA standard. • $1.3 million in penalties were assessed.

You Have a Right to Know About the hazardous materials used in your work area and the potential effects of these materials upon your health and safety.
Where do associates find the information they need? • Labeling - All containers of hazardous materials must have labels identifying the material and warning employees of its potential hazards. • Material Safety Data Sheet: A detailed description of each hazardous material listed on the Materials Inventory.
Basic Label Information 1.Product Name 2. Warning statement, Message or Symbol; 3. Manufacturers’ name and address.

Material Safety Data Sheets • You can find additional information about the hazardous materials you work with in what is called a Material Safety Data Sheet, or MSDS for short. • ALL of the hazardous materials present in your work area will have an MSDS.
What is on an MSDS?The 16-section MSDS is designed to have the information workers and emergency responders need in the first few sections. Some of those sections include: • Identity (name of substance) • Health Hazards • Permissible Exposure • Limits (PEL) • Control Measures • (personal protective • equipment) • Safe-Handling Procedures • Emergency First Aid • Procedures (emergency • telephone number) )
When Do You Use an MSDS? Whenever you need additional information about a hazardous material that is not included on the product label.
