Ethics in Educational Research EDDC 811 Summer 2012 6/7/12
Issues around ethics and research • Protection of participants • Honesty in reporting • Cheating and Plagiarism
Protecting Research Participants • Why do we have research protections? • Past abuses • The Tuskegee Syphilis Experiment (1932-1972) • The Stanford Prison Experiment(1971)
Considerations with participants • Potential physical or psychological harm • Do the procedures prevent any undo harm? • Are possible harmful consequences outweighed by the benefits of the research? • Issues of confidentiality • Protecting participant information • Deception • Is deception necessary? • Are there other means of answering the question? • Coercion
Special Considerations for Minors • Written consent of parent typically needed • Verbal or written assent of child needed in some cases
Institutional Review Board (IRB) • Any institution using federal money for research needs to have one • Ensures that research is done in an ethical manner and in accordance with federal regulations
IRB Criteria • Minimize risk • Risk is reasonable in relation to benefits from research • Equitable selection • Protection of vulnerable individuals • Informed consent • Right to withdraw • Monitor data to protect participants • Privacy and confidentiality
Levels of IRB Review • Exempt • No possible risk to participants and does not require consent • IRB makes this determination, this doesn’t mean you don’t need to go through the IRB • Expedited • Only minimal risk • Sometimes does not require written consent (depends on IRB) • Full Review • The procedures require the review of the entire IRB • This determination is made by the IRB chair at HFU
FERPA • Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act • Extra protection for educational data • Just because you have access to it as an educator doesn’t mean you can use it for research • Ways to get educational data • Get consent from all students and/or parents • Get all identifiers stripped by someone else • Get exception as an administrator of the school with a legitimate educational interest
Honesty in Research • Data should always be presented as honestly as possible • Do not delete data because it does not support your claims • Do not massage, alter, or analyze data inappropriately in order to find desired results • Plagiarism/Cheating
