Wind Indiana 2008Indianapolis June 17-18 By : Jamal Alsawalhi
In my presentation • Purpose of conference • 20% Wind Energy Plan • Wind Energy in Indiana • Conclusion
Sponsors • Sponsored by:- • Indiana Wind Working Group • The Indiana Office of Energy & Defense Development • Purdue University • Partially funded by National Renewable Energy Laboratory
Some Companies Involved in the Conference • Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission • IMPA • Duke Energy • Indiana Power and Light (IPL) • GE Energy • Hoosier Environmental Council • White Construction
Some Speakers • Lt. Governor Becky Skillman • Larry Flower, National Technical director of Wind Powering America • Joan Wealing, past president of Benton County Advisory Plan Commission • Richard Benedict, Indianapolis Power and Light (IPL) • Diane Jenner, Duke Energy
Purpose of Conference • Highlight the great wind energy opportunities in IN • Talk about current wind energy projects taking place in IN and other states • Discuss potential challenges and solutions regarding those projects
Why Wind Energy • High oil prices • Environmental Benefits • Economical Benefits
US Lagging Other Countries for Wind as a Percentage of Electricity Consumption
U.S. Leads World in Annual Wind Capacity Additions; Third in Cumulative Capacity
20% Wind Energy by 2030 • This will create many job opportunities in IN and other states. • According to Paul Cummings 300GW is needed to meet the 20% plan by 2030 • http://www.20percentwind.org/
Key challenges for the 20% plan • Production Tax Credit (PTC) : 1.5 cents/ KWh for the first ten years of renewable energy facility's operation. It expires in December 31 2008 • Transmission Lines • Materials • Trained Labor • Time • Public Acceptance
IN and Wind Energy • Lt. Governor Becky Skillman announced that IN will supply 530 MW of wind energy by the end of 2008 • Two main Projects: • Benton County Wind Farm (130.5MW) • Fowler Ridge Wind Farm (399.6MW) • http://www.awea.org/projects/
IN Current Power Plants • In 2006 IN Produced 3.2% of electricity in the US • Power plants are aging and demand for energy increasing • Need both Coal and Wind
Environmental Benefits • Reduction of SOx, NOx and CO2 gasses • No Water
Public Acceptance • Landowners concerns • The government, landowners and developers should work together • In general communities like the one in Benton County are looking forward for wind energy
Conclusion • The purpose of the conference was to discuss why wind energy is important and discuss current projects in IN • 20% Wind Energy plan is possible • Unfortunately , No discussion regarding electric machinery involved
