The Cell Membrane“The Plasma Membrane” This structure surrounds the cell. It controls what enters and leaves the cell.
The Nucleus This is the command center of the cell; it contains the chromosomes/DNA for the cell (the genetic material).
The Cytoplasm The gel-like material that fills the inside of the cell; it suspends the organelles, but allows stuff to move inside the cell – the “guts” of the cell.
Mitochondrion“THE MITOCHONDRIA” The “powerhouse” of the cell. It is responsible for converting food energy into energy that is usable by the cell. It is a double-membranedorganelled; looks kind of like a raisin.
Lysosomes Lysosomes function to eat or digest old or worn out cell parts. They get rid of bad stuff. They contain digestive enzymes.
Flagellum & Cilia Both function to aid the cell in movement. Cilia are several small hair-like projections and flagellum is a single tail-like projection.
VACUOLE This sac is much larger in plant cells than animal cells. It is used for storage of water and can also store food, nutrients, and waste.
Chloroplast This structure is green and contains chlorophyll for capturing the sunlight needed for PHOTOSYNTHESIS. This organelle is responsible for providing energy to the plant. Not found in ANIMAL cells; similar in fxn to the mitochondria.
Cell Wall Provides structure and support to the cell; not found in ANIMAL cells. Rigid and made of cellulose.
