Proton Counting – an UpdateUnderstanding the DetailsNovember 2005 for this reference setwith updates, calibration comments D. A. Jensen Dec 8, 2005
Understanding the Numbers • The goal here is to look at a sample of data – the November running – and make a number of checks and comparisons to validate and check the data. • This is data from the Data Logger only. No comparisons with the minos data stream ( this should of course be done ! ) • Also provide more insight into the running conditions and accelerator operations. • The Question: How many protons have been delivered to the target ? • How well do we know the number of protons delivered ?
Toroid Calibration Issues • Consider BEAM23[5], TOR101 ( and TR101D), TORTGT (and TRTGTD) • Three independent calibrations - Note that BEAM23[5] is checked against other, e.g. TeV, monitors • There is no reason to assume one calibration is ‘right’, so no cross calibrations have been applied • The ‘reference toroid’ is TORTGT • The ratios of the torids have been very stable. • July 19 – TOR101 calibrated, July 26 – TORTGT calibrated • DCCT recalibrated Oct 18 – Changes < 5 x 10-4
Examples of Toroid Ratios • Date T101/DCCT TGTD/DCCT TGTD/101D • July 25 .994 .991 .997 • Sept 26 .995 .993 .997 • Nov 1 .997 .995 .997 • Nov 12 .997 .995 .998 • Nov 28 .997 .993 .997 • .995 .993 .997
Sample Toroid RatiosTypically 1 hour blocks of NuMI only running, σ ~ 2.5 x 10-4
Continuing with other Checks • Stability Checks • Operations
Number of Spills with Beam • At 2 sec per cycle, could get 43,200 spills/day • Average 30,900 • With Beam 26,500 • ‘With’/’Avg’= 0.86
Spill Frequency How often do we get beam – or have the chance of getting beam? Avg = 2.93 sec
Are there Data Logger Problems ? • Compare the NuMI data logger (heavily loaded ) with the Clock data logger (lightly loaded ) • TRTGTD studied • (NuMI – Clock) /Clock data loggers
Independent Toroid Comparison • Apparent Transport Efficiency • Data from the NuMI data logger • Average = 0.9971
On-Going Issues – Always More Questions • Automate this type of checking - in progress • Background – correction is small -(few) x 10-4 • Miss last pulse of day – correction +(few) x 10-4 ( Gordon caught the fact that a spill in the last second of the day may be missed depending on how the data is pulled from the logger, does not impact the calculation of the milestone of 1 E 20 protons ) • Month by Month summaries • More ??? • It looks like we can keep the error on the number of protons to ± 1 %
Reaching1.0 x 1020 There are several blocks of ‘running’ included. Units are 1.0 x 1018 Dec 04 – Apr 05 00.84 ( Feb, Mar - see earlier talk ) May – November 95.00 Dec 1 – 5 4.09 Dec 6, to 11:30 am .40 Total 100.33 Still Subject to checks and minor corrections
