Math: • Quarterly Focus • Q1 • Understanding Volume • Developing Multiplication and Division Strategies • Using equivalency to add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators. • Expanding understanding of place value to decimals • Understanding the concept of multiplying fractions to fractions • Q2 • Comparing and rounding decimals • Multiplying and Dividing fractions • Multiplying and Dividing decimals • Finalizing multiplication and division with multi digits and long division • Q3 • Classifying two-dimensional geometric figures • Algebraic Thinking • Coordinate Plane • Q4 • Review and filling gaps of Q1-3 Standards

Social Studies • Geography- Continents, oceans, latitude, longitude, mapping skills, countries and states/capitals • Explorers - European Exploration of the Americas, Exploration timeline • Colonization - Colonization of America • Revolution - Causes of the Revolutionary War, Articles of Confederation, Constitution of the United States, Declaration of Independence, American Democracy • Westward Expansion - Exploration of the Mississippi and the growing American landscape • Civil War - Causes of the Civil War • Government - Checks and Balances, State Rights • Economics - Trade, goods and services, bank functions, competition, demand and supply • JA Biztown field trip

Reading • Reading Literature Q1-Q4: • 5.1-quote accurately from a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inference from text • 5.2-determine them of text • 5.3& 5.9-compare and contrast two or more characters, settings, events, and or books within the same genre or theme • 5.4-determine meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, (figurative, metaphor, similes) • 5.5- explain how chapters, scenes, or stanza fit together to provide the structure of the text • 5.6- point of view and influence on the story • 5.7 visual and multimedia elements contribute to the meaning, tone of the text • Foundational Skills Q1-Q4 • 5.3- roots, affixes, and grade level vocabulary • Read grade level prose and poetry with accuracy, fluency, and expression

  8. Writing Quarter 1: Opinion journal responses. Routinely practice the writing process. Basic writing skills such as grammar and conventions. Write a Humorous Narrative. Quarter 2: Opinion journal responses Continues practice of good sentence structure. Routinely practice the writing process on new pieces. Write a Historical Narrative Quarter 3: Opinion journal responses Poetry Unit Write a persuasive Essay Quarter 4: Opinion journal responses Narrative essay Research project about an event of their choice that happened in the Civil War.

  9. New Grading System(A standards- based approach) • Indicates where students are toward their academic goal. • Emphasizes the more recent evidence of learning. The K-5 Report Cards to Parents include the following levels of performance: • 4 = Above benchmark / Exceeds current grade level expectations • 3 = Meets benchmark / At grade level expectations • 2 = Approaching benchmark / Improving but not consistent • 1 = Below grade level / Needs more time and support • Blank = Not yet introduced

Communication & Agenda • Email is the best way to get in contact with the team. • Check your students agenda for homework. • Teachers will post homework and projects on their webpages. • Students are allowed on campus at 7:45. • If you are interested in volunteering for field trips, classroom help, etc. please let us know. We always appreciate the help.
