“Some wounds are easily seen- a cast on an arm, a bandaged leg or stitches after surgery. Others, not so easily: depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder. These are life’s invisible wounds. And while mental illness may not cut, bruise, or break, it’s still a wound that runs deep and needs care”.
About The Oaks • 40 bed psychiatric crisis stabilization hospital • Provides in-patient psychiatric programs for adults, and those with co-occurring mental health and substance abuse disorders • Accredited by the Joint Commission
About The Oaks (cont.) • Staffed by board-certified psychiatrists, psychiatric nurse practitioners, counselors, clinical social workers, and recreation therapists • Patients are admitted either voluntarily or involuntarily • Patients have semi-private rooms on either B-unit (30 beds) or C-unit (10 beds)
What I did at The Oaks • Conducted assessments (psychosocial) • Entered data into computer • Observed art therapy • Observed group therapy • Observed family meetings • Contacted patient’s collateral • Helped find placements for patients • Sat/participated in rounds with doctors and social workers
