ICT PROFILE IN HIGHER EDUCATION Institution: Public: 53 universities, 26 polytechnics Private: 1300 institutions Enrollment: Public: 950,000 and Private: 1,700,000 Participation rate: 12% Telephone density: 30 / 1,000 population Internet providers: 1 / 10,000 population Number of PC: 10 / 1,000 population 2 / 1,000 students JICA - January 31, 2001

  3. PROPOSED PROJECTS 1. DISTANCE EDUCATION: Promoting ICT utilization Objective:Developing capacity and infrastructure in public universities to improve quality, expand access to education, and improve efficiency as well as access to the global information Estimated project cost: $ 40 million 2. HUMAN RESOURCES DEVELOPMENT IN ICT Objective:Strengthen and establish programs in Information Technology, Computer Sciences, and Electrical Engineering in public and private universities Estimated project cost: $ 200 million JICA - January 31, 2001

  4. BENEFICIARIES 1. DISTANCE EDUCATION: All students and staff in public universities (53 institutions,50,000 staff, and 950,000 students) 2. HUMAN RESOURCES DEVELOPMENT IN ICT All IT, CS, and EE programs in public and private universities (programs, staff, and students) JICA - January 31, 2001

FUNDING MECHANISM Proposal based / competitive scheme Evaluation by the Board of Higher Education Sustainability is the primary criteria Procurement mechanism: Central Project Implementation Unit: 60-70% (non proprietary goods and services) Grantees : 30-40% (proprietary goods and services) JICA - January 31, 2001
