EUROPLANE : Challenges for regional airports in Europe (extract) • Not always profitable operation due to small traffic volumes respectively small market demand requires regular financial support • Regional economic and spatial benefits are not sufficiently promoted towards the public (negative image of air transport), • Slot shortage at national hub airports limits “thin” domestic flight connections to regional airports • Air service agreements with third countries should more involve regional airports • National airlines and airports sometimes work against (competing) LCC activities at regional airports

EUROPLANE Resolution • Background • INTERREG IIIC Programme required active participation of EUROPLANE Project Partners in European Transport Policy • Decision of EUROPLANE Partners • Three major findings to be described and addressed to DG TREN by a Resolution to be signed by all EUROPLANE Partners • Action • Call upon the EU Commission DG TREN to establish policies to encourage national and regional governments and authorities to support the sustainable development of regional airports
EUROPLANE Resolution • In detail, the following measures are claimed: • Support of the sustainable development of the regional airport system by national and regional governments and authorities • Review of existing slot allocation rules discriminating against regional airports • Further liberalization of air transport by way of negotiating air service agreements between the EU and third countries
