The Art of Robotics Introduction: Artificial Intelligence vs. ARTificialIntelligence • What is Artificial Intelligence?: • Artificial intelligence (AI) is a sub-field of computer science. Its goal is to enable the development of computers that are able to do things normally done by people -- in particularacting intelligently. • So then what is ARTificial Intelligence? • For our purposes, it is a way of making art using our own intelligence by utilizing artificial mechanisms (like your robot!) The Art of Robotics Introduction: Uses for Robots The robotics sector is no longer in its infancy. Today robotics is a vital part of everyday life in so many ways. Let’s think about what sectors use robotics most often. Over the next few slides, we will look at a few of these major areas where robotics are common. As you go through each sector, talk about what other ways robots are used in these subject areas. Experience Enrichment About Us Introduction Projects IFW Donors

The Art of Robotics Introduction: Functional vs. Entertainment We have talked about important functional uses of robots - ones that help save lives and keep people safe, happy and healthy. Now let’s think about another sector, entertainment. Your robotic artists are examples of entertainment robots. What else could be considered entertainment robots? The Art of Robotics Introduction: Creativity in Robotics • Why is creativity important in robotics? • If robotics engineers didn’t have creativity, what would be the result? • The answer is - more of the same. Innovation frequently comes from creativity - it comes from thinking “outside the box”. If robotics engineers are not creative, the field of robotics will sadly stagnate instead of flourishing. The Art of Robotics Enrichment: Artists who use technology Art and technology have always gone hand in hand. With every wave of innovation has come a wave of new artistic expression. Think about the invention of photography and how that affected fine art. Art became less realistic and more expressive. The same is true today - as technology progresses in this digital age, so to does art! The Art of Robotics Enrichment: Artists who use technology A prime example of artists using technology can be found in the plethora of artists who use 3-D printers on a regular basis. 3D printing has revolutionized the art world. It has impacted all forms of art including fine art and also fashion design. 3-D Printed Art & Jewelry: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j-UGcGV4zzw https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t7_HNEncd3o Experience Enrichment About Us Introduction Projects IFW Donors
The Art of Robotics Enrichment: Art that reflects robotics Now let’s focus on artists who take inspiration from robotics but use conventional art methods. One such artist is the Oakland, CA based artist Nemo Gould. Nemo was born to artist parents. Gould earned his B.F.A. degree at the Kansas City Art Institute, and his M.F.A. degree at U.C. Berkeley. His work has evolved to reflect the images and mythology of comic books and science fiction. “My work appeals to the seven-year-old boy mind, because I still have one… I take silly very seriously.” – Nemo Gould Visit his website: http://www.nemogould.com/ Experience Enrichment About Us Introduction Projects IFW Donors
The Art of Robotics Enrichment: Art that reflects robotics In 2007 Gould was selected as Artist in Residence at San Francisco Recycling and Disposal, Inc.’s Solid Waste Transfer and Recycling Center. This was a dream come true for the artist. Gould’s work has been featured frequently in national media and is shown in galleries and museums throughout the U.S. and abroad. The Art of Robotics Enrichment: Abstract Expressionism Your artwork made with robots might resemble the work of the abstract expressionists. Abstract Expressionism has become the term for a group of artists in post WWII America. These artists were committed to an expressive art of profound emotion and universal themes. In their success, the New York painters robbed Paris of its mantle as leader of modern art, and set the stage for America's post-war dominance of the international art world. The Art of Robotics Enrichment: Geometric Abstraction Another type of art that your work might resemble, depending how you build and use your robot, is geometric abstraction. Geometric abstraction is a form of abstract art based on the use of geometric forms placed in non-illusionistic space and combined into non-objective compositions. Although avant-garde artists popularized the genre in the early twentieth century, similar motifs have been used in art since ancient times. The Art of Robotics Project: Recycled art from technology Taking inspiration from artists like Nemo Gould and Kenyan artist Cyrus Kabiru (click the link below to learn more about him), use recycled technology materials to create something new and fun out of something that would normally be thrown away. The Art of Robotics Project: Draw your dream robot! • In the past, science fiction fantasized about a future with robots. Some of the fantasies have become reality. Now you are in a position to make more of these fantastical dreams reality! Take inspiration from these ‘vintage’ robot ideas, or find your own sci-fi inspiration and draw your dream robot of the future. Experience Enrichment About Us Introduction Projects IFW Donors
The Art of Robotics Project: Robotic vs. human proportions In art, it is widely understood that to draw a realistic human figure in proportion you must use the scale of 7:1 or 8:1, meaning your body is 7-8 times the size of your head. In robotics there are no such rules, but it has been argued that robots who hold to this realistic set of proportions are “creepy”. Why do you think that is? Experience Enrichment About Us Introduction Projects IFW Donors
The Art of Robotics Project: Robotic vs. human proportions Would you prefer a “creepy” human-like robot or a uniquely proportioned robot? Take your drawing of your dream robot from the previous project. Then measure it and figure out what scale your robot is. Did it conform to human proportions? Did you find a new set of ideal robotic proportions? Share your findings with us on our Twitter or Instagram pages. Experience Enrichment About Us Introduction Projects IFW Donors
