SHRM collects information from members about their satisfaction and needs through both formal and informal methods: • Formal survey • Field visits • Field Services Directors • Member contact centers throughout the organization (i.e. knowledge center, member care, panels, etc.) • Membership Advisory Council Member Satisfaction
Determine State Specific Local Needs • Help chapters evaluate common local issues across the state, i.e. unemployment, healthcare, talent shortages, military unemployment, etc. • Evaluate survey data • Conduct a statewide member survey • Check out the information SHRM has available about your State online • Work with your FSD • Survey your non-member conference attendees • Check out the Census Bureau and BLS Step 1
Set Your Goals! • Increase SHRM member penetration in [state] by x% year end. • Increase member retention [in state] by x% year end. • Receive national recognition for addressing local unemployment within 2 years. • Help establish a state workforce development program by [date]. • Become contributing writers for ___ state publication on ___ topic. • Receive Platinum level SHAPE recognition by 2013. Step 2
Determine the extent to which chapters are meeting those needs • Not enough to have a State Conference to try to meet those needs because they require more than a one time fix • You need sustainable programming over the long-term and throughout the State • Review chapter programming and discuss findings during State Council meetings Step 3
Work with local chapters to develop statewide initiatives! If you determine that there is a statewide skills shortage, what are some things you can do to address the challenge? Step 4 - BRAINSTORM
Identify Easy Wins and Execute • Avoid huge undertakings in the first year or two • Check out Pinnacle Award winners for ideas • Brainstorm with other similarly situated State Councils • Crown your Membership Chair as your Membership Czar! Steps 5 & 6
