MASLOW’S HIERACHY OF NEEDS & ROGER’S CLIENT CENTERED THERAPY
Abraham Harold Maslowwas an American psychologist founder of a movement called Humanistic psychology. • Best known for creating • Maslow's hierarchy of needs
Hierarchy of Needs • Maslow believed that you can not move up the scale until the lower basic needs are met. d
Basic Needs • The basic first step is the physiologic needs/ • Food • Water • Shelter
Safety • Safety is the next step • This includes an individual’s need for security. Everyone needs to feel that they are not in harm’s way or any life threatening situation. • Examples can include Abuse, flooding, war, physical unsafe housing.
LOVE • Love- This deals with the human being’s need for love, acceptance and socialization.
Social Acceptance • A person may have love and acceptance in their life with their family, however if at school or work they do not feel accepted then this too can have a negative impact.
ESTEEM • This level deals with achieving goals and feeling competence and successful. • Ex. Graduation,
SELF ACTUALIZATION • This is a level that most find difficult to reach. Once you feel competent and that you have achieved, then it drives one to achieve their own unique potential. • Ex. You may have graduated from PCI dental assisting program but now you want to take that education and work with children in a pedo office because of your own potential.
Spirituality • For some people this final step of self actualization includes a higher level of spirituality and inner peace.
Roger’s Client Centered Therapy • Carl Rogers- humanistic psychologist, who developed a theory on patient needs and priorities.
Roger’s Theory • Roger assumes that the patient knows how they feel and what they want. The patient has established their own priorities. This may be from previous personal experiences or influences of other individuals. SELF
Roger theory has individual self in the middle The following are all areas of the person’s life that surround them but do not limit them from reaching their goal: • Physiologic needs • Safety • Love • Self Esteem • Self actualization (knowing who you are)
