SunTrust’s Move to TADDM 7.2.1Nathaniel DukesITSM Tool SpecialistSunTrust Banks, Inc. TADDM User Group 11/30/2011
Agenda • Corporate Infrastructure • SunTrust uses for TADDM • 7.2.0 Setup • 7.2.0 Challenges • Upgrade or Rip/Replace? • 7.2.1 Setup • 7.2.1 Benefits • Next Steps
Corporate Infrastructure • Including: • 5 different server OS (Windows, AIX, Linux, etc) • Multiple network device brands • Multiple Database and Middleware application types • 1,100+ Business Applications
SunTrust Uses for TADDM • Current user base of ~100 users • Typical concurrent user count of ~2-10 during business hours • Infrastructure Inventory • Asset and Configuration Management Groups • CI source for CCMDB/TSRM • CCMDB 7.2.0.1 and TSRM 7.2.0.1 • used by Entire Corporation • Component Comparisons • Application/Server Support Groups • Business Continuity/Disaster Recovery • Dependency Mappings • Application and Server Support Groups • QA of New Device Builds • Provisioning Group
7.2.0 Setup • 1x Enterprise TADDM Server • 1x Enterprise DB2 Server • 3x Discovery Servers • 3x Gateway Servers • 3x DB2 servers • Discovery Time: ~1x/month • TADDM Servers running Win 2003 x32 • DB2 Servers running DB2 v9.5 on AIX 6.1
Challenges • Issues with synching data to Enterprise TADDM • Confusing architecture; different discovery servers were used based on what was being discovered • Slow discovery time • 32-bit operating system (Windows 2003)
Upgrade or Rip/Replace Option 1 – Upgrade PROS: • No data is lost; all templates, applications, access list entries, discovered data, etc. is retained CONS: • More involved process, especially with OS upgrade • Requires all data be synched with Enterprise TADDM Option 2 – Rip/Replace (uninstall 7.2.0 & install 7.2.1) PROS: • Relatively simple process, especially with replacing OS w/ 64-bit Windows • Templates and access list entries can be imported • Use of Grouping Composer to enable quick application definitions • CONS: • Business Applications must be redefined • All data must be rediscovered
Decision • Decision was made to do a Rip/Replace • OS’s were updated to Windows 2003 R2 x64 • DB2 Servers consolidated into a single DB2 • Access List entries and custom templates were imported from the previous version
7.2.1 Setup • 1x Primary Storage Server • 1x DB2 Server • 2x Secondary Storage Servers • Dedicated to client access • 4x Discovery Servers • Discovery Time: currently 4x/month (minimum) • TADDM Servers running Win 2003 R2 x64 • DB2 v9.7 on AIX 6.1
7.2.1 Benefits • Consolidated individual DB2 servers into a single server • Better use of resources; Windows Gateway Servers can now be used as Discovery Servers • Much faster discovery time (minimum 4x faster) • Multiple discoveries can be run concurrently • Centralized interface • Data is available as soon as it’s discovered • No synching necessary due to streaming mode
Next Steps • Upgrade to v7.2.1 FP 1 • Increase system availability • Request additional TADDM enhancements http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/rfe/?BRAND_ID=90 • Additional TADDM Resources: • TADDM wiki: https://www.ibm.com/developerworks/mydeveloperworks/wikis/home?lang=en#/wiki/Tivoli%20Application%20Dependency%20Discovery%20Manager • TADDM Best Practices wiki: https://www.ibm.com/developerworks/mydeveloperworks/wikis/home?lang=en#/wiki/Tivoli%20Application%20Dependency%20Discovery%20Manager/page/Best%20Practices
