Why spend the money? Playing a musical instrument can: • Help your child develop a commitment to excellence • Help your child develop self-esteem • Contribute to a balanced, positive, challenging, and stimulating education • Increase brain development, math abilities, and higher thinking skills • BE FUN!

Our goals for fifth grade band • Create good young musicians by modeling and teaching: • Correct fundamentals • Care of instruments • Accurate playing • Evaluation (Report cards; 2nd semester on regular report card)
Have instrument, book, and pencil daily Practice regularly (15-20 minutes 4-5 times a week Taking care of instrument Behave, pay close attention; listening skills Always doing the best you can Expectations of students
Support and encouragement – SLOW PROGRESS! Provide time and quiet place for practice. Provide an instrument in good working condition (Buyer beware!) Provide a music stand Keep instruments in good working order Keep child supplied with oils or reeds Private lessons if at all possible Not many parents can help with this subject like they can with math, social studies, etc. Better to start than to add lessons later Child is more successful, retention is higher Expectations of Parents
Misconception: You need to practice for hours each day in order to be any good. Reality: For most young players, 20-30 solid minutes Is adequate to gain a moderate amount of success. At the beginning, 15-20 minutes 4-5 times a week Is necessary
Misconception: I can do it alone Reality: Although you should practice alone, You need focus and guidance. If you hope to Be first chair or create music effortlessly, Then a private teacher can be very helpful Misconception: It can be done anywhere Reality: You can practice in many different Places. However, a “special place” complete With light, a music stand, chair, and a pencil, Is needed
Misconception: You should practice every day Reality: It is good to practice REGULARLY Because muscle strength, coordination, and confidence Will improve, but a a break for a day or two is often Necessary to maintain physical and mental health!
Procedures • Have instruments, books, music stands ready to go • START DATE: Monday, October 10th • Extra teachers for first two weeks, then every day 9th period • Not pulled out of any classes!
