  1. Medical Procedures to the Upper Eyelid Can Make a Lot of Positive Difference The eyes are the windows to the soul, it is often said. The first thing people notice about us when we meet, are normally the eyes. This means that the person you’re talking to, will most likely even unintentionally look at the areas around your – eyes, and also at the eyelids. – There are some people who may have, what we call, a droopy eyelid, which literally means that the lid, the upper lid, “droops” or sags downwards. Some people may actually deal with this droop in both eye lids. For some people it is a matter of improving their appearance; for others it is more than that: this droopy lid may cause their vision to be interfered with when the lid droops too low over the pupil. An eye surgeon is the person to talk to in this regard. The condition is referred to as ptosis in medical terms, and repair or correction can be done in both adults and children. It can develop with age, but in some cases children are actually born with it. It often manifests itself more seriously when those people with this condition are very tired, when the lid can droop very low, more than under even normal circumstances, and therefore interferes with their vision.

  2. In children who are born with this disorder, it is advised to treat the condition early on, so that the development of their vision is not hampered. Ptosis is a condition typically caused when those muscles that are used to keep the lid open, do not function properly. In the elderly it is often more common, because with age the body and its muscles also eyelid muscles start to deteriorate and function less – effectively. Of course it can also be caused by other forms of damage such as accidents. Certain forms of medication in high concentrations are also mentioned to be a possible cause. – Fortunately, a good doctor can diagnose the condition and suggest the treatment to correct this condition. One would normally prefer to deal with an ophthalmic surgeon to perform a procedure that will reverse the condition. Whether the patient’s problem is the cause of a true medical condition or simply because the onset of age causes the so-called “lazy” or droopy eyelid, a qualified doctor such as an eyelid surgeon that deals with both reconstructive and cosmetic eyelid problems, should be consulted for the best advice, which, in many cases involves no more than a fairly small procedure or operation. An experienced plastic eye surgeon that carries out these procedures all the time is the best person to talk to. He/she can correct the condition by raising the lid, thereby improving not only the way you look but also improving your eye sight if indeed the droopy lid caused you problems with your vision. For most it means no more than an outpatient procedure which can be done under local anaesthetic. Of course, depending on the patient and the doctor, a general anaesthetic may be administered but surgeons often prefer the first option since it allows them to adjust the position of the patient’s lids while the eyes are open. But, individual cases may vary, and the surgeon will know best. The procedure itself is straight-forward and fairly quick. The patient will be calmed by the anaesthetic, and the surgeon will go ahead by making a small incision in the crease of the upper lid to remove excess loose muscle and, for example, fatty deposits in the lid. The surgeon will obviously have established beforehand what the root cause of the patient’s ptosis is and will perform the procedure accordingly to correct or reverse the condition. Recovery normally takes a few weeks; most people are ready to return to work after a week or two. A good plastic surgeon that performs this kind of surgery all the time is guaranteed to help virtually every patient that needs this procedure.
