Integrated analysis of continental outflow and transpacific transport of Asian pollution using aircraft and satellite measurements Rynda Hudman Colette Heald Daniel Jacob ITCT 2K2 Data Workshop March 5-6, 2003 - Boulder, Colorado
Research Question & Approach • What are the sources of transpacific pollution plumes and how do these plumes chemically evolve as they cross the Pacific? - Contribution from fuels vs. biomass burning sources - Ozone production in plumes - Interannual variability (2001: TRACE-P vs. 2002: ITCT-2K2) - Surface Air Quality (Jaegle, Carmichael, Goldstein, Jaffe) • Approach: - GEOS-CHEM simulation of ITCT-2K2/PEACE-B Period - Integration with ITCT-2K2, PEACE-B, TRACE-P, and MOPITT observations • Today: - May 5th plume; outflow: PEACE-B, transpacific transport: MOPITT, and comparison to February 22nd-27th TRACE-P plume

Preliminary Conclusions & Future Work • Preliminary Conclusions: - The May 5 transpacific plume included both Asian fuel and biomass burning components lifted in WCB outflow -Ozone was enhanced in both components of the plume, more so in the biomass burning component; this enhancement is not obvious in observations because of high background. It reflects production over Asian continent or immediately downwind. Elevated PAN/NOy in May 5 observations are consistent with this view - MOPITT observations during ITCT-2K2 show several events of transpacific transport, including the May 5 plume • Future Work: - Develop biomass burning inventory for the ITCT-2K2 period using a combination of VIRS and other products? - Further interface of PEACE-B and ITCT-2K2 - Further interpretation of MOPITT data
