What is a Power Standard? • Defined- • Power standards refer to those standards and indicators (benchmarks) that are critical for student’s success. • We are all responsible for being a part of the team, it cannot be shipped off to the curriculum department. We never disregard our colleagues.

Criteria for Identifying Power Standards Endurance • What is the value beyond the current year? • What is the value beyond this year’s test? • How far into a student’s academic and professional life will this reach? Leverage • Will proficiency be valuable in multiple areas? • How helpful is proficiency I this skill to other disciplines? Readiness for next level of learning • Will this provide essential knowledge or skills needed to insure success in the next level of learning (or grade level)? • What do the next year’s teachers expect students to know to be successful in the next grade level?
Things to Consider School • How will it help them in school, this year and beyond? Life • How much of an impact would NOT knowing it be on life skills? MEAP/MME/ACT • How important is it to the state test? How is it tested? Is it core or extended core? What percentage of the test is dependent on knowing this?

The Process • ELA grade level reps are trained in the process of developing power standards • Grade level reps will bring training back and will utilize the process to develop Power Standards at each building • ELA grade level reps will share vertical comparisons/commonalities to develop district Power Standards • Building level teams will review both at grade level and vertically • Final District Power Standards are adopted
