COACHING PSYCHOLOGY IN THE U.S. • PRACTICE • Long history of one-on-one consultation to executives (1940’s) • <not called ‘coaching’ until more recently> • Many psychologists from Industrial/Organizational (I/O), clinical, counseling psychology – increasingly migrating practices to coaching in organizations • The practice area still referred to as the “wild west” (no agreement – definition, competencies, standards for practice)
COACHING PSYCHOLOGY IN THE U.S. • SCIENCE • First appearance of “coaching” in American journals – 1980’s • Not a lot of research until 1990’s – much more recently • SCP’s Consulting Psychology Journal – the primary journal for coaching – four special issues 1990’s to present • Some of our “quagmires” have impeded progress – beginning to change
COACHING PSYCHOLOGY IN THE U.S. • “QUAGMIRES” • Licensure • States each have own licensure law, requirements • Many General Applied Psychologists ignore law • Highly emotionally charged issue within I/O psychology • Disassociation on the part of many I/O’s from anything clinical • Credentialing • Because related to licensure – not valued by many academics • Science – Practice tensions

Preliminary Definition – Coaching Psychology (There was much laughter at this slide. We will finalize the definition on the basis of DATA from the competency project practice analysis. Coaching Psychology is an area of professional practice and research within the broader discipline of psychology. It is an individualized process of professional development in which a coaching psychologist works with individuals one-on-one and/or sometimes in a broader context, to enhance their effectiveness in their organizational roles and environments. The coaching process and relationship are designed to benefit both the individual and the organization in achieving their respective goals. The practice of Coaching Psychology is grounded in scientifically established psychological theories, principles and methods. It is practiced by qualified psychologists who, among other requirements, have a graduate degree in a psychology discipline from a regionally accredited university and relevant post-graduate qualifications, and who undertake suitable continuing professional development. Controversy: Whether “team coaching” is coaching – or consulting. (More laughter) Agreed – specific context.
