What is a Sacrament? • Outward Sign • Something seen, heard, felt • Instituted by Christ • Found in the work/teaching of Jesus • Gives or transmits grace • The grace acts in the way signified by the signs
For each sacrament • Matter • Action performed • Form • What is said • Minister • The one who visibly presides at the liturgy • Effects • What action does the grace accomplish
Purpose of the Sacraments • Sanctify • Increase our holiness • If we put no obstacle in the way • Build the Body of Christ • In number • In strength of each member • Serve as worship • As it is Christ who works in each

Grace • Sanctifying • From the Paschal Mystery • The life of the Trinity within us • Makes us a member of the Divine Family • Totally unmerited we don’t deserve it! • Even if the minister is in a state of sin! • Actual • The strength God gives us in a particular temptation or moment of need
Sacramental Character • An invisible seal or mark that: • Configures us to Christ • Distinguishes us perpetually • Helps us to cooperate with the grace of the sacrament • Three sacraments: • Baptism • Confirmation • Holy Orders
