Goals of America’s PrepareAthon! Increase the number of individuals who: • Understand which disasters could happen in their community, • Know what to do to be safe and mitigate damage, • Take action to increase their preparedness, and • Participate in community resilience planning.
Research-Based Approach • Messaging is more effective when trusted community members deliver information. • Experiential learning makes real change possible. • Promotes peer-to-peer discussions within and across community networks. • Coordinates with existing campaigns (e.g. The Great ShakeOut and local campaigns).
Working Together • The Ready Campaign established four universal building blocks of preparedness – Be Informed, Make a Plan, Build a Kit and Get Involved. • America’s PrepareAthon! builds on this foundation by encouraging millions of Americans to focus on a simple, specific activity that will increase preparedness.
Campaign Structure • Hazard specific • Protective actions, preparedness actions, mitigation measures • Sector specific • K-12 schools, institutions of higher education, workplaces, faith-based organizations, community organizations, individuals and families and local leaders • National Days of Action twice a year: Spring and Fall • April 30, 2014 Launch: Tornado, Hurricane, Flood and Wildfire • September 30, 2014: Earthquake, Hazardous Materials, Pandemic Flu and Severe Winter Weather • October 16, 2014: Great Shakeout Day of Actionearthquake drills held nationwide • National resources for local action • Customize local events using the “PrepareAthon!” sub-brand. • Action at Three Levels: • Individual: A preparedness action everyone can do that will make a difference for a specific disaster; is no-cost, and can be done in many venues. • Organizational: A scenario-based discussion to walk managers through their organization’s plans for disaster response. • Community: HSEEP-based TTXs emergency managers can use for whole community planning.

Participation Process • Organizations, workplaces, schools and families across the country will hear about America’s PrepareAthon! • Outreach by FEMA and stakeholders will engage organizations and individuals in communities across the country. Registration and materials will be available at ready.gov/prepare.
Participation Process • The America’s PrepareAthon! website ready.gov/prepare offers free resources, templates, toolkits and hazard-specific information for download. • Participants will join millions of Americans in America’s PrepareAthon! to practice how to stay safe and prepare for hazards facing their communities.
Participation Process • The word spreads through community networks and social media networks to encourage coworkers, customers, friends, family and community to participate. • Communities are better prepared to withstand a disaster and able to recover more quickly if the whole community is involved.

April 30th National Day of Action • Who is Next to join the Campaign? • Seeking a college or university to hold a tornado drill or other preparedness activity on campus on April 30th. • One time activity or the beginning a new preparedness campaign. • Receive guidance from your FEMA Preparedness Liaison in planning your event. • Support from your FEMA Region External Affairs in promoting the event.
