  3. Agency funded for a specific project • To be successful: • Applicants must be aware of the fellowship • Applicants must apply by deadline • Applicants must meet all stated requirements • Applicants must put together a cohesive application

  4. Grants made by foundations for self-developed projects • To be successful: • Applicants must be aware of the fellowship opportunities • Applicants must have an idea for the project • Applicants must find a host organization for the project • Applicants must be willing to put in significant time researching, developing, and writing the application

Self-developed projects • How to begin • Find your passion • Develop relationships with organizations that work on the issues you are passionate about • Make a short list of organizations that you would like to work for (research the reputation of the organizations) • Approach these organizations and find out if they are willing to host a fellow (this may require educating the org as to requirements)

Self-developed projects cont. • Have an idea of the type of project that you are interested in developing • Read over past BC Law student fellowship applications • Collaboratively work with the organization to design a project that fits with the mission (of the organization) and your interests • Kate Devlin Joyce is available to assist in the design, development, and writing of the proposal

  8. Equal Justice Works Fellowship • Two- year fellowships • Provide salary and loan repayment assistance • Looking to launch public interest careers • EJW fellows advocate on behalf of individuals, groups, or interests that are not adequately represented by the civil legal system

  9. The Skadden Foundation Fellowship • Funded by the charitable foundation of the international law firm of Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher& Flom • One year fellowship renewable for a second year • Civil legal service to the poor • Does not fund fellowships in areas of immigration, environmental or criminal

  10. echoing green Public Service Fellowship • echoing green is a private foundation apply a venture capital approach to giving • Money to create a new autonomous public service project or organization • May be domestic or international • Two year fellowship

  11. Soros Justice Advocacy Fellowships • Two year fellowship • Identifies and nurtures new voices and agents for change at the local or national level • Must have 3 years experience with the issues and community applicant proposes to work with • Host may be non-profit or government agency
