Cloud Formation & the Water cycle An invitation to ponder upon the signs of the Creator
Allah is He Who sends the winds, so they raise clouds, and spread them along the sky as He wills, and then breaks them up into fragments, until you see rain drops come forth from their mist! Then, when He has made them fall on whom of His slaves as He wills, lo they rejoice! Ar-Rum: 48
Different Concepts • Water could have come from the infiltration of precipitations in the soil. • Under the effect of winds, ocean water was driven towards the interior of the continents. • According to Aristotle, water vapor from the soil condensed in cool mountain cave and formed underground reservoir that fed fountains. • In the year 1580, Palissy clarified the concept of water cycle. He claimed that underground water came from rain water infiltrating into the soil, this is the most acceptable and confirmed concept.
However, as secular concepts of the past are being rejected, with the advent of new scientific research and breakthroughs, the Islamic concept continues to shine through as the steadfast truth!
Have you not seen how Allah makes the clouds move gently, then joins them together, then makes them into a stack and then you see the rain come out of it… An-Nur:43
Driven along by wind… Cumulonimbus clouds begin to form when wind pushes some small pieces of clouds (cumulus clouds) to an area where these clouds converge. Small pieces of clouds (cumulus clouds) moving towards a convergence zone near the horizon, where we can see a large cumulonimbus cloud.
Joining together…. Then the small clouds join together forming a larger cloud. (A) Isolated small pieces of clouds (cumulus clouds). (B) When the small clouds join together, updrafts within the larger cloud increase, so the cloud is stacked up. Water drops are indicated by ·
Stacking… • When the small clouds join together, updrafts within the larger cloud increase. The updrafts near the center of the cloud are stronger than those near the edges. These updrafts cause the cloud body to grow vertically, so the cloud is stacked up. • This vertical growth causes the cloud body to stretch into cooler regions of the atmosphere, where drops of water and hail formulate and begin to grow larger and larger. When these drops of water and hail become too heavy for the updrafts to support them, they begin to fall from the cloud…
And We send the winds fertilizing, then caused the water to descend from the sky, and We gave it to you to drink, and it is not you who are the owners of its stores. Al-Hijr: 22
Meteorologists have only recently come to know these details of cloud formation, structure, and function by using advanced equipment like planes, satellites, computers, balloons, and other equipment, to study wind and its direction, to measure humidity and its variations, and to determine the levels and variations of atmospheric pressure.
Meteorologists have also found that these cumulonimbus clouds, that shower hail, reach a height of 25,000 to 30,000 ft (4.7 to 5.7 miles)… …like mountains! (For reference: Mt. Everest is 29,029 ft high!)
“...And He sends down hail from mountains (clouds) in the sky...” An-Nur: 43
Such is the perfect system designed by Allahswt! • The water cycle is powered bysolar energy! • 86% of the global evaporation occurs from the oceans, reducing their temperature by evaporative cooling. • Without the cooling effect of evaporation the greenhouse effect would lead to a much higher surface temperature of67 °C,and a warmer planet!
Oceans – 97% Ice caps and glaciers – 2% Lakes, ground water, soil moisture, atmosphere, streams and rivers, all living things – 1%
Then which of the blessings of your Lord will you both (jinn and men) deny?Ar-Rahman: 13
