  3. Recognition of the Need • Design a cleaner, more efficient, affordable and sustainable cooking solution for very low income families in developing countries, specifically Kenya, and to create a profitable business with our product.

  6. Economic Background • To ship a 10 pound package from Pittsburgh, PA to Nairobi, Kenya it costs almost $300 (22,290 ksh) • Kenyans are willing to pay: • 20ksh ($0.27) per day on fuel • 10ksh ($0.13) per person per meal

  7. Environmental Background • Deforestation (Farmland, Urban development) • Along the coastal belt the climate is fairly hot and humid all year round. (72.30-86.50 F) • In the far north, temperatures can be high. (74.660-94.60 F) • Central area (Nairobi) has a mild climate. (56.50-77.30 F)

  12. Customer Needs Assessment • Cheap fuel available in Kenya • The stove should cook for at least 5 people / meal • It should cook food as fast as the Jiko or even faster • Easy to handle (also easy to clean) • It should last for at least 5 years.

  13. Community Needs Assessment • A secure product which does not require a window or a big chimney connected to the outside of the house • Culturally accepted (no sharing with others) • The fuel should be available in Kenya • The price of the new stove should be less than $20 ( KES 1,500)
