Location • The old empire of Ghana is located is not located in the same spot as the modern country Ghana. • The old empire of Ghana is about 400 miles Northwest as today’s modern Ghana.
Government of Medieval Ghana • The king, ably was assisted by a council of elders, headed the government. • The kingdom was put into districts, there were leaders of each district. • They had laws.
Daily Life • People were either farmers, miners, or artists. • They made great fabrics. • They had Niger River that provided water for farming, washing, bathing, and fishing.
Army • Ghana had great Military Power. • Legend says the king could order 200,000 warriors and 40,000 more with bows and arrows.
Griots • The Griots were story tellers. • Kids did not go to school, They gather and hear the wonderful stories that the Griots would tell. • The people loved the Story of Anansi the Spider.
Trade • The people of Medieval Ghana were rich, but Ghana never owned Gold or Salt mines, they became rich from trade. • Ghana offered the traders a deal, Ghana’s large army assured them a safe passage. • In return they restricted trade to gold dust only.
