Making Health Successful and Sustainable Senior Health Jessica Lythe
Instilling passion for your subject beyond Year 13 • Students in the Level 3 class this year were enrolling in the following courses/ careers: -Teaching- Primary -Social Work -Midwifery -Occupational Therapy -Physiotherapy -Nursing degree -Paramedics -Health Sciences -Personal Training -Sport and Recreation -Psychology -Communication and Marketing -Pacific Studies -Sports Science -Physical Education and Health teaching
A starting Point • Key people to get on-board -Senior management -Careers Adviser -Deans -H&PE department
How to make it successful • Questions to ask yourself: • Who is your target audience? How will Health meet the needs of your students at your school? • What do you want your programme to look like? Not only next year but in 5 years time. • What resources do you have currently? • Rooming? • Staff?
Key things that worked for me • Propose it as an Academic course- pre-requisites of 50% English. • Ensure key people understand the course- careers, deans, SMT. • Key points in a competitive world- University Approved, Full AS, Literacy.
Key things that worked for me • Staff- -enthusiastic, hard-working, fantastic rapport with students, • interest in Health, creative with resource making. I can teach them the rest / send them on PD.
Key things that worked for me • Focus on Level 1. Put time and energy into this- once you capture them at Level 1 they will continue with Health- (and tell their mates) • Constantly talking about careers and jobs out there that might interest them. Making every unit relevant to the real world. • Health is so relevant to students’ lives. Facilitation of discussion is important; getting them to critically think. Using the real world.
In the classroom • Health has a huge advantage before we even start: • it is so relevant to teenagers’ lives • we create life-long learners instantly • students see it as interesting and meaningful……… and they get credits at the same time : )
In the classroom • Vary your teaching methods • Students enjoy: • Ppts • Video clips / you tube • DVD’s • Recent real life articles/ stories • 20/20; 60 minutes; Target; Close Up; News: Real life • Presenters , outside agencies • Have staff who are happy to discuss, answer questions, challenge, question, encourage critical thinking. • Instill a passion for watching documentaries and forming opinions • So mix it up… every week

If You Keep Doing the Same Thing, You’ll Keep Getting the Same Result
Teaching as inquiry approach • TEACHING -What strategies are most likely to help my students learn this? • LEARNING: -What happened as a result of the teaching, and what are the implications for future teaching? • FOCUS: What is important given where my students are at?
Teaching as inquiry approach • Reflect on L1 course to inform L2 programming and also to improve L1. • Always do a course review. • This might be after every unit or at the end of the year. This will help you understand what has worked well and what needs improving. • Always improve your programme- this might be 1 or 2 things each year. Get staff on-board. Divide tasks up. • Don’t be afraid to do a review of your teaching style. What do the students enjoy. • Listen to your students.
Ask the students • What did they like? • What did they not like? • What assessments • did they enjoy? Why? • What teaching strategies • work best for them?
HEALTH is relevant to the students’ lives. This is a key to why students will continue with Health. • Health Any Questions? Comments ?
