  1. Law of Liberty: An Introduction to New Testament Commands

  2. Intro: We Are Free! • John 8: 31-36; • [31] Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; • [32] And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. • [33] They answered him, We be Abraham's seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free? • [34] Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin. • [35] And the servant abideth not in the house for ever: but the Son abideth ever. • [36] If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.

  3. Intro: We Are Free! • I. Introduction: We are free! • A. Free from sin; • B. Free to live in accordance with God’s Word;

  4. Intro: We Are Free! • Romans 6 • [1] What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? • [2] God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?...

  5. The Law of Libery: • II. What were we freed from? • A. Freed from the ‘law of sin’;

  6. The Law of Liberty: • Romans 7: 14-25; • [18] For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not. • [19] For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do. • [20] Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me. • [21] I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me. • [22] For I delight in the law of God after the inward man: • [23] But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.

  7. The Law of Liberty: • II. What were we freed from? • A. Freed from the ‘law of sin’; • B. Freed from the ‘penalty of sin’; • Romans 8: 2; • For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.

  8. The Law of Liberty: • III. If we were freed from sin, we should not desire to go back to being the servant of sin. • A. N.T. Liberty is not a license to sin; • B. Worldly Liberty is not of God’s Word; • C. To continue in or return to a life of sin is to remain in chains of sin;

  9. The Law of Liberty: • IV. The Perfect Law of Liberty (God’s Word) • James 1: 21-27; • …[25] But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed. • [26] If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man's religion is vain. • [27] Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.

  10. The Law of Liberty: • IV. The Perfect Law of Liberty (God’s Word) • James 2: 8-12; • …[10] For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all. • [11] For he that said, Do not commit adultery, said also, Do not kill. Now if thou commit no adultery, yet if thou kill, thou art become a transgressor of the law. • [12] So speak ye, and so do, as they that shall be judged by the law of liberty.

  11. The Law of Liberty: • V. It is imperative that we follow the commands of God’s Word. • Imperative: adjective • A. They are commands • 1 : of, relating to, or constituting the grammatical mood that expresses the will to influence the behavior of another • 2 : expressive of a command, entreaty, or exhortation • 3 : having power to restrain, control, and direct

  12. The Law of Liberty: • V. It is imperative that we follow the commands of God’s Word. • B. They are not to be avoided; it is necessary that we keep them. • 2 : not to be avoided or evaded : NECESSARY

  13. The Law of Liberty:

  14. The Law of Liberty:

  15. The Law of Liberty: • VI. How do I know which commands apply to me? • A. If failing to obey them causes us to return to sin! • 2 Peter 2: 21; • For it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after they have known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them.

  16. The Law of Liberty: • VI. How do I know which commands apply to me? • B. Even some of the Old Testament commands may still apply! • 2 Peter 3: 2; • That ye may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us the apostles of the Lord and Saviour: • 1. If Jesus tells us so; • 2. If the apostles tell us so;

  17. The Law of Liberty: • VI. How do I know which commands apply to me? • C. If failing to obey causes us to live a lie; not to be Christ like!

  18. The Law of Liberty: • 1 John 2: 3, 4, 7-8; • And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments. • He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. • Brethren, I write no new commandment unto you, but an old commandment which ye had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word which ye have heard from the beginning. • Again, a new commandment I write unto you, which thing is true in him and in you: because the darkness is past, and the true light now shineth.

  19. The Law of Liberty: Who is subject to the command? That doesn’t apply to me! Who, Me? That’s only for Pastors! That was only for the Jews! But I live under Grace!

  20. The Law of Liberty: Related Thoughts; • A. I have Liberty but it’s not expedient or beneficial for me; • I Corinthians 6: 9-12; • …[11] And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God. • [12] All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any.

  21. The Law of Liberty: Related Thoughts; • B. Don’t use your liberty as a cloke of malice! • 1 Peter 2: 12-17; • …[15] For so is the will of God, that with well doing ye may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men: • [16] As free, and not using your liberty for a cloke of maliciousness, but as the servants of God. • [17] Honour all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the king.

  22. The Law of Liberty: Related Thoughts; • C. Grace is not a license to sin! • Romans 6: 1-2, 15; • [1] What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? • [2] God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein? • [15] What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid.
