  2. Summary Statement • True Faith is able to effectively deal with the trauma of the death of a loved one.

  3. Abraham: Man of Faith • Abraham had lived with Sarah for many years and yet was able to accept her death. • As people of faith, we cannot escape the reality of grieving, but we do not grieve as those who have no hope

  4. The Experience of Dying (23:1-2) • Accepting the reality of aging and dying with morbid despair is a sign of maturity

  5. Sarah’s Death • Sarah died • She was 127 years old • She died in Canaan

  6. The Experience of Death (23:3-16) • Accepting the reality of dying and dealing with the reality of death are no the same thing

  7. Abraham’s Response • He recognized that he owned no land • He sought to purchase a burial site

  8. The Hittite’s Response • They revered Abraham • They readily acquiesced to his request

  9. Abraham’s Choice • He had chosen a burial plot • He asked that some intercede on his behalf

  10. The Hittite’s Offer • They wanted to give the site to Abraham • They offered the site for no charge • Abraham insisted on buying it

  11. Abraham Buried His Wife • He bought the field • His focus was the cave at the end of the field • He was committed to Canaan

  12. The Experience of Bereavement (23:17-20) • Accepting the reality of dying and of death means that you understand that life for the living goes on.
