Feelings of hopelessness can lead to poverty. In Malawi, for example, many people act as though there is no way to escape poverty and believe that since they have always lived in poverty they will always live in poverty. When nobody is fighting to escape poverty then it is unlikely that this will be accomplished, causing people to continue to endure poverty.
A cause of poverty is overpopulation. In countries such as India, Bangladesh and China there is an increasingly high amount of people living in smaller areas. This leads to an issue with carrying capacity; there are so many people that the land cannot support them. There are not enough resources to go around and they will end up living a more impoverished lifestyle.
One cause of poverty is disease, specifically HIV/AIDS. In I Am Because We Are many residents in Malawi were poor and HIV positive. If you are suffering from AIDS you may not be able to work and make money, leading to a cycle of poverty.
High standards of living and cost of living is a cause of poverty. In countries such as the U.S. the average income is approximately $30, 000 a year, whereas in developing countries a person may have a high standard of living if they own a few livestock and a home made out of mud. It costs more to survive in a developed country in comparison to a developing one so different definitions of wealth and poverty can lead to seemingly high poverty rates.
A cause of poverty is overpopulation. Some countries experiencing poverty are way over their carrying capacity. An example of this the country on Bangladesh, whose population density is way too high. This means that there will not be enough resources, employment, or land for all of the people leading to poverty.
An area’s geographical location can also cause poverty. In Attawapiskat, one of the main problems is that it is so hard to read the area, and therefore difficult to ship out the needed supplies to help fix it up. This results is a high cost of shipping for all imported supplies. If countries/ communities have to pay hefty fees to get the vital resources that they need it can result in the country slipping into poverty.
One effect of poverty is disease. In Malawi people are dying of AIDS due to the fact they have no money for transportation to hospitals or for HIV treatments. If you lack the money needed to access medical care than you are more likely to suffer from diseases such as AIDS.
Crime is an effect of poverty. In I Am Because We Are young males in Malawi committed theft so that they could support themselves and their families. Living in poverty with no job or options to gain money, they steal to continue living and to support their families.
Poverty can create a cycle of poverty that is hard to escape. In Attawapiskat families who live in poverty may not be able to provide their children with as many opportunities that will lead to future success, such as involvement in extra-curricular activities or provide them with learning materials such as books or computers. Without the same access to resources and opportunities, children are less likely to gain wealth, leading to a cycle of poverty.
An effect of poverty is disease. An example of this is malaria. People living in poverty may not have access or money to purchase bed nets to protect them while they sleep of medicine to help them when they get sick. People living in poverty often die from diseases such as malaria.
