  5. Karen Phethean University of Winchester January 2012 Library Sessions • Weeks 1-5 – One off session timetabled around your taught sessions on a Monday or Tuesday. • Small group - Group split into two - (a) and (b) • Timetable and groups on LN as advised.

Karen Phethean University of Winchester January 2012 Visit to the Cathedral • This WEDNESDAY – 18th January 2012 • Please meet Karen / Sally outside the main entrance to the Cathedral – 5-10 minutes before the start of the session to register. • Cheryl Bryan, Education Officer for the Cathedral will conduct the sessions. • Groups 1, 2, 3, 4: 9 -10am • Groups 5, 6, 7: 10.15 – 11.15 am • Groups 8, 9, 10:           11.30 – 12.30am

Karen Phethean University of Winchester January 2012 Visit to the Cathedral • Information about how to plan and organise an offsite visit to a place of interest. • Links with your Foundation assignment and presentation. • After each session in the Cathedral you will be required to undertake a short self directed activity in a small group within the city centre. • You need to download this from the LN and take with you on Wednesday – and a risk assessment form.

  8. Karen Phethean University of Winchester January 2012 Optional Study Skills Workshops • Run by Rosie Johnson in Student Services • These will be advertised via the LN and you will be able to sign up for a session of your choice – they will cover planning an essay and academic writing.

Karen Phethean University of Winchester January 2012 Managing your time - Perspectives • Key Study Skills: • Knowing how long it takes you to do something • Avoiding running out of time “Consciously increase your awareness of time and the amount of time different things take, in order to improve your planning.” (Turner, J. (2002) How to Study. London: Sage)

Karen Phethean University of Winchester January 2012 How long does it take you to ???… • Read a book with 10 chapters • Read one chapter in a book, say 12-15 pages • Take notes from one chapter • Clear a space on your desk so you can work comfortably • Sharpen your pencils, get paper together, find a bookmark for your book, …. • Mind map • Write the first draft of an essay • Get started writing for an essay • Read through your notes before starting to write an essay • Read through and revise your writing • Surf the net (adapted from Turner, 2002)

Karen Phethean University of Winchester January 2012 Procrastination is the thief of time(Edward Young,1683 – 1765) • Switching between too many different tasks too frequently • Talking rather than doing • Spending too long on presentational elements. • Doing low priority work over more important.

  12. Karen Phethean University of Winchester January 2012 The 3 Ps of study survival strategies • Pace - being realistic and honest • Planning – being committed and organised • Prioritising – being aware and calm.

Karen Phethean University of Winchester January 2012 Planning • Diaries and Student Planners • Put in key dates – work backwards from these to place in deadlines • Number the weeks – so you have a sense of time available and progress • Timetables • Useful to break tasks down into smaller more manageable parts • Space tasks and allocate time effectively – e.g. work in the morning, time off in the evening – link to how you as an individual work.

Karen Phethean University of Winchester January 2012 Listing and Prioritising Urgency – demand immediate attention / length of time before a task MUST be completed Importance - help to achieve long term goal / benefits of completing a task against the loss if the task is not completed Think of 2 things that you would place in these boxes for today/ tomorrow/ next week. Use this to timetable what you will do when. What about time for reflection?

  15. Karen Phethean University of Winchester January 2012 Good study habits: • Do important work when you are at your most productive • Make the most of small scraps to time • Keep documents organised • Have a plan • Extend your working day – do you make the most of all of the morning?

Karen Phethean University of Winchester January 2012 10 tips for good academic study (adapted from McMillan & Wyers (2011) – The Study Skills Book) • Have a good / positive study environment – be tidy, reduce noise - music; escape – avoid interruptions. • Avoid distractions – texts/ e-mails / TV/ computer games / chatting / shopping • Work in short bursts – have breaks • Find a way to start • Be positive • You don’t need to be linear! • Break tasks down into manageable “chunks” • Peer support • Seek support – ask for help • What is perfection?
