Fall 2014 Sample Projects Instructor: Manfred Huber
Wireless Health Display Shirt • Develop a shirt that can measure life signs (e.g. heart rate, EKG), display them, and transfer them to a handheld device • System should work without outside connections • System should measure the life sign • System should display the measurements on the shirt • Sponsor: TBD
Secure Optical Interactive Interface • Develop a secure, interactive optical interface that can be built into interactive devices to communicate with a Microsoft Surface to transfer interactive data for gaming (for active game pieces) or health care (for secure health data transfer) • System should allow to upload data (or a program to the object) • Object should “talk” to the table through its interface when placed on it • Object should convey data back to the interface • Tentative Sponsor: Dr. Zaruba
Distributed Spot Cleaning System • Develop a System that uses a scalable number of robots and sensors to detect where spots/trash has occurred and sends one of the robots there to clean it • System should detect the occurrence of the spots / trash / items • System should dispatch robots to remove them • System should minimize the amount of energy expended (i.e. distance traveled) • Tentative Sponsor: Dr. Weems
Sidewalk Banner Painter • Develop System that can print a multi-colored banner on a sidewalk using either sidewalk chalk or colored sand • System should be able to draw banners at least 20ft in size • System should be compact and transportable • Tentative Sponsor: Dr. Weems
Classroom Attendance Tracker • Develop a system that can automatically detect the presence of a student in the class and register it with the professor’s device • System should work without any need for the instructor to identify individuals • System should only register students (or their devices) who are actually in the class • System should work without the student having to enter anything during class • Tentative Sponsor: Nicholas Burns
Empty Seat Guidance System • Develop a system that can based on ticket type and seat category direct the individual to an unoccupied seat • System should work without anyone entering occupied seats • System should direct user in an intuitive way • System should work without disturbing others (no turning on light or phones turned bright in the auditorium) • Tentative Sponsor: Your TA
Fall Prevention Device • Develop a System (either built into a cane or walker or on the person) that can detect (or predict) falls • System should measure factors related to falling and stability • System should not require any connection and be easily portable • System should provide data to a computer • Tentative Sponsor: Dr. Levine
Presentation Remote Wand • Develop a light device that can be used to manipulate objects projected onto a computer screen (like a presentation remote) but with localized functionality • Device has to be light and self-contained • System has to allow moving, zooming and other functions at the location the “want” is pointing at • Device should allow the person to walk in front of the screen and still correctly identify the pointing direction • System should provide data to a computer • Tentative Sponsor: TBD
Virtual Clothes Fitting System • Develop a System that can take a 3D scan (3D image or set of images) of a person in a store, estimate their clothes size and allow the person to select clothes from a list and display them on the actual person • System should build a model of the person • System should compute clothes sizes • System should display the clothes on the virtual person • System should allow to turn the virtual person on the screen • Tentative Sponsor: TBD
