Body Paragraphs • Begin with brainstorming. Which literary elements do you want to analyze in your essay? Choose 4-5 • Break down each literary element into three paragraphs: What does the literary element mean to dramas? What choices did Tennessee Williams make to build that literary element in the text? What did you do in your performance to bring out the intended character? • Three paragraphs per literary element x 4-5 elements = essay easily completed. • Create the topic sentences that will lead the body paragraph.
What does the literary element mean to dramas? • Chose an element (Tone). • Ex: Creating tone is of great importance to a playwright. • This paragraph is to set up the following two paragraphs. You want to show that you understand the element and what it means to the overall genre. 3-4 sentences
What choices did Tennessee Williams make to build that literary element in the text? • Ex: For the selected scene in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Tennessee Williams creates tone in a variety of manners. • This paragraph will show the reader that you understand why the playwright made certain decisions regarding the direction of the play. Analyze a specific line or stage direction to what it means to the literary element. Tell the reader why that line or excerpt is an perfect example of the literary element. Remember, in a drama, every choice made is leading to a performance. Remember the direct quotes! 5-6 sentences
What did you do in your performance to bring out the intended character? • Ex: In my performance, I took the written cues of the playwright and added specific movements to demonstrate the intended tone of my scene and character. • This paragraph is about your performance. You will refer to the analysis you did in the previous paragraph. Think of it as the previous paragraph being what he wanted the actor to do, and this paragraph, what I did and added using his direction. Also, why were the decisions made? ANALYSIS! 5-6 sentences
Outline • Use the outline to set your path and stay focused.
Tips • BP 1: What does that literary element mean to dramas? Think abut the effect it has on the actor and audience. • BP 2: After the topic sentence, introduce the quote you want to use to prove that Tennessee Williams used that literary element effectively. After the quote, analyze why that quote is so effective in demonstrating the element. • BP 3: How did you perform that line? Did you follow the stage directions or what did you do differently? Analyze what you did and how you did it.
