  2. First things first… • THANK YOU FOR COMING TONIGHT!!! • The information packet on your child’s desk contains helpful information related to math and reading. • The students have made a puzzle for you to complete! It will give you a glimpse into the mind of a new 5th grader!

  3. Getting to know Mrs. Hellman • Proud graduate of UGA! Goooo Dawgs! • MSEd.- State University of West Georgia. • I am married with two GREAT kids—Ethan (5th grade), and Claire (2nd grade). • I have been teaching for 19 years. This is my 10th year teaching 5th grade at Big Shanty!

  4. Important School Policies • Notes are needed for: • Absences – Please provide a note anytime that your child is absent for any reason. After 5 absences, excused or unexcused, there will be a note sent home just to make you aware that your child has been out 5 times. After 10, another note will be sent home as well as a visit or phone call from the school Social Worker. • Transportation Changes—must be made in writing. Email notifications to the teacher will not suffice for transportations changes. This is a safety issue. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation!!!

  5. School Policies continued. • P.E. Excuses – Please provide a note if your child cannot participate in PE for various reasons and be sure to state how long your child cannot participate. • Make-Up Work for Absences – Students are required to make up the work they miss when absent. Your child will have one day per every day they are absent to complete make-up work.

  6. Cobb County Dress Code • We have provided a handout with some important information and reminders about dress code. Please read it carefully and discuss it with your student. We will see a lot of physical and emotional growth this year!! • Students SHOULD NOT wear flip-flops! They are dangerous for recess play. • Please sign and return the bottom of the handout.

Classroom Policies • Thursday folders go home on Thursday afternoon and should be signed and returned on Friday morning • Spelling and Math Homework completed nightly • Read for at least 20 minutes each night (Reading Logs will begin in a few more weeks and will require a parent signature weekly. 8.
