    2. A Balanced Approach Various components of literacy are taught to students within the framework of the school day. As a result, students become well rounded in literacy.

    3. Within a Balanced Approach Attention is paid to ALL processes that students use to make meaning of their lives

    4. IMPORTANT TO KNOW Becoming literate happens differently for each person No single program, strategy, or approach will be effective with all students As a result, a balanced approach must include the following:

    5. What are the Components Taught in Balanced Literacy? Shared Reading Read-Aloud Guided Reading Independent Reading Writing

    6. What are the Components Taught in Balanced Literacy? Literature Critical Thinking Speaking Listening

    7. In being Literate one can determine what to do to make meaning of various sources: Books, Newspapers, Magazines, Journals Computer screens, the Visual arts Mathematics All types of media encountered in society: signs, speeches, music + *Being open to the perspectives of others

    9. Imperative Teacher’s Role Executed Efficiently Determining students’ interest Learning students’ background Observing students while they’re working Analyzing students’ strengths & weaknesses Connecting instruction to curriculum
