Engineering • Best practice guidelines and tools for improving road infrastructure safety (RiPCORD – iSEREST – 2005-2007) • Road Safety Inspection: • Aim to ensure existing road networks are maintained at highest level from a traffic safety point of view • Periodic supervision • Research and comparison of safety audits, black spot management and road safety inspection

Engineering • Creating a global vision for the road of the future (NR2C - 2003) • At present there is no standard for the concept of a European road hierarchy • Results from a large stakeholder survey show need to compromise between reduced global construction/ maintenance costs, safety and environmental criteria

Engineering • Intelligent Transport Systems and Speed Management • Enhanced safety and efficiency in road transport was researched (REACT - 2006): • Transmit real-time data to a central server in order to generate safet alerts and relevangt information for road and law enforcement. • Results of cost benefit and cost effectiveness analysis of ISA are available and encouraging for traffic safety and accident reduction (PROSPER 2005 and SPEEDALERT 2004) Model studies and demonstrations show that Intelligent Speed Adaptation can be implemented over a relative short time. The higher the implementation rate, the more impact on accident reduction and the severity of injuries.

7. Engineering • Tunnels • Global approach to tunnel safety was researched in the SafeT project. • Starting point is European Directive to set minimum standards • Common framework to plan, design, build and operate a new tunnel that follows acceptable safety levels.

8. Education • European good practice on road safety education aimed at young people (ROSE 25) compiled to disseminate and spread (Youth on the road internet portal). • On the website country reports for all EU countries can be found on the Road Safety Education, the national curricula and the different actions and measures implemented (http://ec.europa.eu/transport/rose25/index_en.htm)

9. Education • RoadSafetyWeb centralises all data of awareness raising campaigns in the field of road safety. • Access is only possible after subscription but contains interesting background information and good examples. • Results on educational campaigns for young beginning drivers with potential risky behaviour (www.close2.net)

10. Enforcement • Assessment of road safety measures (ROSEBUD) • Cost Effectiveness Analysis • Cost Benefit Analysis • Network of policy makers, decision makers and other relevant stakeholders • Reports available at www.rosebud-eu.org • The EC supports research on cross border enforcement (CAPTIVE). A common approach on for cross border enforcement has been suggested, taking into account the different steps, legal, organisational, procedural and other barriers that need to be overcome.
