Obtaining Renewal Credits The teacher will maintain a Certificate Renewal Plan/GBE folder of having earned a minimum of 120 renewal credits to include: a. Professional development activities that directly relate to the educator’s professional growth and development plan (GBE), support the goals of the district’s Strategic Plan and the school’s Improvement Plan, and promote student achievement; and b. Certificate renewal option/activities for which eligibility criteria have been met as specified in the renewal credit matrix.
Submitting Renewal Credits 1. Complete and submit proposed activities for approval on the “Renewal Credit Pre-Approval and Verification Form” to your principal or supervisor. 2. Upon approval, complete the activity and attach verification documentation to the “Renewal Credit Pre-Approval and Verification Form” to be placed in your Certificate Renewal Plan/GBE Folder. 3. After earning 120 renewal credits, complete section A and B of the “Renewal Credit Computation Sheet.” 4. Submit the “Renewal Credit Computation Sheet” and the “Request for Change Action Form” along with all necessary verification documents to the Certification Specialist in the Office of Human Resources (Debbie Ivey).
1.College Credit SDE guidelines Maximum: up to 120 renewal credits may be earned via this option during the five-year validity period of the certificate. Accrual rate: 1 semester hour of earned course credit = 20 renewal credits Certificate Renewal Plan Matrix *If you do not have a masters degree, then you have to take at least one 3-hour graduate course (60 renewal credits). Option 1:
State Department of Education Certificate Renewal Course Maximum: up to 120 renewal credits may be earned through approved renewed courses during the five-year validity period of the certificate. Accrual rate: 1 semester hour of earned course credit = 20 renewal credits Certificate Renewal Plan Matrix Option 2:

Publications • Maximum: up to 60 renewal credits may be earned via this option during the five-year validity period of the certificate. • Accrual rate: • primary author of book or referred journal article = 60 renewal credits • primary author of non-referred journal article = 30 renewal credits • secondary author of book or article = 15 renewal credits Certificate Renewal Plan Matrix Option 4:
5.Instruction • Maximum: up to 60 renewal credits may be earned via this option during the five-year validity period of the certificate. • Accrual rate: • College/university course: 1 semester hour of instruction = 20 renewal credits • Presentation: a one-hour presentation = 3 renewal credits • (This includes preparation time) • Key word is FORMAL. 6. Professional Training Maximum: up to 120 renewal credits may be earned via this option during the five-year validity period of the certificate. Accrual rate: 1 hour of direct participation = 1 renewal credit This option can include CEU units. 1 CEU = 10 hours of direct participation. e.g. New Horizon Training/CPR/MOUS/ Mentor Training/SIP Training/ Crisis Intervention Prevention Media Crisis Training District Technology Competency Test, Level One = 10 renewal credits Certificate Renewal Plan Matrix Option 6:

Professional Assessor/Evaluator Maximum: up to 60 renewal credits may be earned via this option during the five-year validity period Accrual rate: 1 hour of direct participation = 1 renewal credit ADEPT Evaluator = maximum 30 renewal credits (one school year) Principal Assessor = 30 renewal credits National Board Evaluator = 20 renewal credits SACS Evaluator = 20 renewal credits State Department Evaluators = 20 renewal credits Certificate Renewal Plan Matrix Option 7:

Mentorship, Supervision, or Coaching • Maximum: up to 60 renewal credits may be earned via this option during the five-year validity period • Accrual rate (maximums): • Supervision of student teacher (one semester) = 20 renewal credits • Internships = 20 renewal credits • Mentoring (full year) = 30 renewal credits • Coaching (full year) = 20 renewal credits • ADEPT Mentor = 30 renewal credits • Supervision of Practicum Students = 10 renewal credits • Supervision of Teacher Cadet Students = 10 renewal credits Certificate Renewal Plan Matrix Option 8:

Educational Project, Collaboration, Grant, or Research Maximum: up to 60 renewal credits may be earned via this option during the five-year validity period of the certificate Accrual rate: 1 hour of direct participation = 1 renewal credit Maximum for each activity within this option: 30 renewal credits Grant guidelines: Local Grants = 5 renewal credits State and or Private Grants = 10 renewal credits Federal Grants = 15 renewal credits Certificate Renewal Plan Matrix Option 9:

Samples of Activities Not Intended for Certificate Renewal • Association membership/leadership activities; • Committee/board meetings; • National Board Certification; • Business meetings; • Required work experience (e.g., on-the-job training to fulfill job requirements, performance of required duties and responsibilities); • Entertainment and recreation; • Travel, unless accompanied by an approved travel study program; and • Unsupervised study. The activities listed above may be used with your GBE evaluation but do not meet the certificate renewal guidelines.
Certificate Renewal Plan/GBE Folder The following items will be included in the folder: 1. the educator's Professional Development Plan (GBE) which lists the educator's goals (GBE 1, GBE 2, & GBE 3) that directly relate to the professional development and growth of the educator, support the goals of the district or educational entity, and promote student achievement, 2. all completed Renewal Credit Pre-approval and Verification forms for the professional development activities to be used for credit to renew the certificate, · 3. a Renewal Credit Matrix outlining the renewal options/activities which are available, · 4. Verification/documentation of successful completion of the professional activities to be used for re-certification, · 5. a completed and signed Renewal Credit Computation sheet, and · 6. a completed and signed Request for Change/Action form.
