  2. Covenantal Hear O Israel…Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Deuteronomy 6: 5-7

  6. Family Special Events • Relevance – What do families want? • Creating a successful family event • An event that appeals to all ages • Memories and family traditions • Outreach - inviting friends and neighbors • Participation – all church members can engage and experience the joy of serving

  7. Church Calendar Opportunities • Reformation Day—celebrate our heritage through the history of the Reformation • Advent—prepare for the celebration of our Savior’s birth, the incarnation • Easter—celebrate God’s love and provision for our salvation through Christ’s death and resurrection

  8. Parent Connection • Take away component • Tool parents can use to extend learning • Connect at summer outreach events • VBS • Sport and Day Camps • Summer Story Time Adventures

Special Events • Fun, fellowship and components that can bring the family together and bring families together with each other within and outside the church • The Gospel is GoodNews: “It’s a sin to bore a kid with the gospel.”—Jim Rayburn • Include a gospel component—message and/or take home keepsake • Christmas Ice Skating Party • Spring Roller Skating Party • Parent/child Valentine themed “date nights” • Musical, theatrical, entertainment events • Daddy/Daughter Lockins • Mother/Daughter Teas • Family Camps/Camping experiences • Other Seasonal events—swimming, sledding…

Planning Process • Determine your purpose, goals, and evaluation process • Check: church, school and community calendars • Time: 2-3 hour special events are reasonable for workers and families • Establish budget: Fee or free? Estimate costs of ALL resources! • Team: volunteers, professionals, staff • Delegate: Divide and conquer—divide jobs in manageable chunks with team “point people” oversight; search for special talents needed • Recruit: recruit singles, teens empty nesters, etc. to work at family events • Reserve: building space and coordinate custodial and/or other needed support • Identification: way for workers/staff to be indentified; nametags for participants? • Evaluate: Debrief every event—evaluate plus create “after action” notes for future improvements

Wrap-up • Be strategic planning events that provide opportunities for families in your church to grow, play and learn together • Remember to extend the learning with a take away component • Make events fun so families will invite others to join them—they are your best promoters • Add opportunities for multi-generational participation • Extend to entire church family—serving and connecting the body will add momentum
