Functions and Duties • Identify, investigate and resolve complaints in long term care facilities • Inform residents how to obtain services • Ensure regular and timely access to services • Advocate for residents’ rights • Provide administrative and technical assistance • Analyze, monitor and comment on legislation • Provide training to ombudsmen and volunteers
Federal Fiscal Year 2009 • The Ombudsman Program has the authority to investigate complaints in nursing homes and assisted living facilities • Nursing homes - 136 (15,770 beds) • Assisted living facilities - 1,922 (28,940 beds) • Number of complaints investigated - 5,477 • Paid staff (ft/pt) - 22 • Volunteers - 61 • Volunteer hours - 10,089
