Probability Day 1

Probability Day 1. Probability. P(Event) = P(E) Toss of coin: Probability of landing on heads: P(H) =. “Probability of an event”. Probability. P(will definitely occur) = 1 ex: Have 1 die. P(roll a #). = 1. P(never occur) = 0 ex: Have 1 die. P(roll a letter). = 0.

  1. Probability Day 1

  2. Probability P(Event) = P(E) Toss of coin: Probability of landing on heads: P(H) = “Probability of an event”

  3. Probability P(will definitely occur) = 1 ex: Have 1 die P(roll a #) = 1 P(never occur) = 0 ex: Have 1 die P(roll a letter) = 0

  4. “Probability Warm-Up” Notes • A spinner is divided into tenths. The sections are numbered 1 to 10. If the spinner is spun, find the probability the number is • a multiple of 4 4 or 8 P(4 or 8) = • between 0 and 30 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, …10 P(1, 2, … , 10) = 1 10 2 9 3 8 4 7 5 6

  5. “Probability Warm-Up” Notes • A spinner is divided into tenths. The sections are numbered 1 to 10. If the spinner is spun, find the probability the number is • 2 P(2) = • ½ ½ isn’t on the spinner P(½) = 1 10 2 9 3 8 4 7 5 6

  6. “Probability Warm-Up” Notes • A bag contains 8 brown socks and 6 black socks. If two socks are randomly drawn, what is the probability that they will match? Total socks = 14 Two cases: 1. Two Brown: 2. Two Black: only 7 brown & 13 total left now OR only 5 black & 13 total left now

  7. “Probability Warm-Up” Notes • A die is rolled. Find the probability of each event. • The number showing is less than 5 1, 2, 3, or 4 • The number showing is between 2 and 6. 2 < 3, 4, 5 < 6

  8. “Probability Warm-Up” Notes • Two dice are rolled and the numbers are noted. Find the probability of each event. • The sum of the numbers is less than 5 When you are doing dice problems: 1 die: 6 total outcomes (6) 2 dice: 36 total outcomes (6 x 6) 3 dice: 216 total outcomes (6 x 6 x 6)

  9. Sum < 5 ? Possibilities when 2 dice are rolled TOTAL = 36

  10. “Probability Warm-Up” Notes • Two dice are rolled and the numbers are noted. Find the probability of each event. • The sum of the numbers is less than 5 • The sum of the numbers is 4 or 5.

  11. Sum = 4 or 5 ? Possibilities when 2 dice are rolled

  12. “Probability Warm-Up” Notes • Two dice are rolled and the numbers are noted. Find the probability of each event. • The sum of the numbers is less than 5 • The sum of the numbers is 4 or 5. P(4 or 5) =

  13. “Probability Warm-Up” Notes • There are 12 tulip bulbs in a package. Nine will yield yellow tulips and three will yield red tulips. If two bulbs are selected at random, find the probability of each event. • Both tulips will be red • One tulip will be yellow and the other red I: Y/R II: R/Y 12 total 9 Yellow 3 Red only 2 red & 11 total left now

  14. Extra Example—Deck of cards One card is drawn at random from a deck. Find: a) P(Queen) b) P(King of Spades)

  15. Homework #5 15-9 Probability WS (Don’t need to do Mixed Review) & CST WEEK 7 Due!!!
