A PROJECT INSPIRED BY PERSONAL HISTORY. THE 80’S IN THE TURKISH PRIMARY SCHOOL SCEN E.
E N D
THE 80’S IN THE TURKISH PRIMARY SCHOOL SCENE • Our teacher used to present those who eventually learn how to read and write well with a red ribbon. Also, I don’t know if it still exists, but when I was at the first grade, there was an apple tree in our classroom. The teacher would draw an apple for each student and she would paint them red as students were learning how to read and write. The best student in the class would check his apple the first thing everyday as he entered the class. We used to study really hard for a ripe apple.
THE APPLE TREE • TRANSPARENT • DISPLAYS BOTH INDIVIDUAL & WHOLE GROUP PERFORMANCE AT ONCE • ACTS AS A MOTIVATIONAL TOOL FOR SOME
MY INTERPRETATION using can-do statements as a process marker three way communication tool self awareness indicator & booster motivational tool goal setter
BACKGROUND • Al LEVEL • 56 WEEKS OF TUTION TO BECOME B2+ • NO IDEA ABOUT CEF OR MONITORING OWN PROGRESS • DAY 3 • TLP WORK & OUR CAN DOs
I STARTED BY... • Giving the Can-dos inTurkish to all Basic sections • Collating the results for each student & for the class THE GRAPH • Sharing the findingswith colleagues • Sharing the findingswith students • Considering the implications: On day 3, listening, writing & study skills - very good!!
BUT… • Graphs - static, do not reflect the progress • No apple tree effect without the big picture • Too long a processfor the teacher • Too repetitive • Limiting the students only to the content of the statements • Based on a false perception of tasks • A matter of confidence
So, what happens to the apples? • Shortened the list of descriptors (From 70 to 25) • Started using tutorial times to discuss individual progress & share the overall class performance • Turned can do statements into a variety of can do tasks • Started using a variety of visuals to represent progress
CAN DO TASKS • BLOGS: T0 add comments to can do questionnaire Only for writing: http://icanwriteinenglish.blogspot.com • INTERVIEWS:Volunteers interview me about my perception of them. • YOU-CAN STATEMENTS: Student feedback
PROGRESS INDICATORS: MODERN APPLE TREES • VARIOUS GRAPHS • MAP PINNING • PUZZLES • AN INVENTION:How much do I deviate from A2?
