MLK vs. MX Essay Prompt: Compare and contrast the persuasiveness of Martin Luther King’s speech “I Have a Dream” and Malcolm X’s “Ballot or the Bullet.” To evaluate their persuasiveness, discuss how DIDLS is used in appealing to the audience’s ethos, logos, and/or pathos. You will need to address two different appeals in your essay.

  2. Introduction Paragraph • Identification: • Names of Speeches • Authors • Dates • Background: • Reason the speeches were written • Authors’ viewpoints (main argument) • Thesis: Which speech is more persuasive? Why? (no personal pronouns) • Due to the use of powerful language, and the strong connection to the audience, Martin Luther King’s speech is far more persuasive than the one given by Malcolm X.

  3. Body Paragraphs • Pie-ie • Organize the paragraphs by rhetorical appeal • Discuss BOTH authors’ use of DIDLS • DON’T USE THE ACRONYM DIDLS IN YOUR PAPER!

I • Lead-in • Quote from the speech (Must be one of the elements of DIDLS) E • Context for the quote • Identify which element of DIDLS is being used • What is it’s impact? • Which appeal is it? What makes it that appeal? EXPLAIN. • How is it more persuasive compared to the other speech? Repeat I and E, but for the other speech.
