Genesis 25:21-34 ESAU’S BIRTHRIGHT & OUR’S
Birthright • “Any right or privilege to which a person is entitled by birth (inheritance).” • Under the Law, a double portion for the oldest son (Deut 21:15-17). • Exceptions: Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Ephraim & David
Esau’s Birthright • All of Isaac’s wealth from Abraham (Gen 12:16; 20:14; 25:5). • BLESSING from Isaac • But he & his descendants proved unworthy (Gen 27:27-28; 38-40; Mal 1:2-4) • PROMISE of God to Abraham (Gen 12)
Esau’s Birthright DENIED! • “Esau despised” it (Gen 25:34). • “To regard as unworthy of special attention.” • Esau was “profane” (Heb 12:14-17). • “Irreverent toward God & sacred things.”
Jesus’ Birthright • Jesus received His birthright after His resurrection (Heb 1:4-5; Ac 13:33-35; Psa 2:7). • Jesus became “the firstborn among MANY brethren” (Rom 8:29).
Our Birthright • When we are raised from baptism to walk in newness of life (Rom 6:3-4). • We are “born again” (1 Pet 1:23-25; Jn 3:5). • We are “born of God” (Jn 1:13). • We become “children of God” (Gal 3:26-27). • We enter the “house of God” (1 Tim 3:15). • We receive “every…blessing” (Eph 1:3, 7). • We become “heirs of God & joint heirs with Christ” (Rom 8:17; Gal 4:6-7).
Keeping Our Birthright • Hunger for spiritual food (Matt 4:4; 5:6) • Love God more than life itself (Matt 22:37; Mk 8:35; Jn 12:25). • Get used to self denial (Titus 2:11-12; 1 Jn 2:15-17; Jas 4:4; Jas 1:27). • Love the fellow heirs to the birthright (1 Pet 2:17; Jn 15:12; Jas 1:27).
