  4. Training Completed • Foldesi - 38th National Conference on Radiation Control, Detroit, MI • Paris - NRC Training, Chattanooga, TN

  5. Equipment Needs/Purchases

  6. Re-structuring of Radiological Health Program • Elevated from Bureau to Division level within Office of Epidemiology • Program Director position upgraded and reports to Deputy Director of the Office of Epidemiology • Fiscal and administrative support now provided by Business Manager • New positions: supervisor and 4 radiation safety specialists created for RadMat (NRC)

  7. Radioactive Materials • NRC Agreement State Status • Letter of Intent- December 14, 2005 • Site visit to North Carolina • NRC STP staff visit to VDH • Letter to NRC licensees

  8. Other State Programs • Minnesota became 34th Agreement state 3/30/06 • Pennsylvania submitted draft application mid June 2006 • New Jersey submitted Letter of Intent in June 2006

  10. Processes • Draft application • Radiation Protection Regulations • Fee Schedule Regulations • Recruit six (6) new positions: NRC Program Manager, 4 radiation safety specialists and a fiscal technician

  11. Processes Draft Application • Two month notice- given June 15 • Draft application due mid-August • Forms and guidance documents based on Wisconsin • NRC requested final regulations in June

  12. Processes Radiation Protection Regulations • Board of Health approved April 21, 2006 • Executive Review Completion? • Effective Date (July?) • Begin process again in 2007 (NARM)

  13. Processes Fee Schedule Regulations • Develop and initiate rulemaking • Fees- application and renewal • Fees- financial assurance, bonding and reciprocity • Civil penalties • 18 month process • Update X-ray fees

  14. Processes Recruit Six (6) New Positions • Supervisor • 4 Specialists • Fiscal Technician Senior-database NOTE: Staffing is not needed to submit draft application.

  15. X-ray Program • Private Inspectors- credentialing • FDA withdraws support for machine inspections

  16. Environmental/Radon/Emergency Planning • Environmental reports on VDH website • New software for TLD reader • EPA Radon Grant reduced from $75,000 to $56,000 • CDC grant ($550,000) approved to replace mobile radiation lab with incident command vehicle.

  17. Emergency Planning • Effort underway to replace vacant wage position with a full-time, classified position to include emergency planning duties. • TOPOFF IV- nuclear detonation

  18. Emergency Planning • VOPEX- Feb 7, 2006 Surry • VOPEX – Dec 5, 2006 North Anna • New EPA Guidance • Potassium Iodine Thyroid Blocker-liquid form and 65 mg pills to supplement 130 mg pills.
