  3. SARA Purpose • The purpose of the UTRGV Center for Sustainable Agriculture and Rural Advancement (SARA) is to improve agricultural sustainability and to advance rural communities through multidisciplinary approaches, engaging UTRGV faculty and students in the environmental, economic, and social aspects of sustainability. • SARA is an integrated research center that provides research, education, and outreach. • Visit us at www.utrgv.edu/sara

  4. SARA Research • SARA facilitates research and integrates it with opportunities for engaged scholarship and experiential learning, preparing UTRGV students for future jobs that help address the environmental, economic, and social challenges associated with meeting the need of food, fiber, and fuel for a growing world population. • For more information on research activities contact Dr. Alex Racelis at alex.racelis@utrgv.edu

  5. SARA Education • SARA plays a critical role in education, strengthening UTRGV as the premier university in Texas for undergraduate and graduate education in sustainable agriculture and food systems. This systems-based, integrated approach is leveraged to facilitate capstone, experiential-learning, and internship opportunities for students. SARA serves as a coordinating platform for UTRGV’s interdisciplinary degree plans related to sustainable agriculture—a BS degree in Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems (SAFS), and the MS degree in Agricultural, Environmental, and Sustainability Sciences (AESS). • For more information on educational opportunities in sustainable agriculture, contact Dr. Cristopher Gabler at christopher.gabler@utrgv.edu

  6. SARA Outreach • In addition to research and education, SARA provides an outreach component that helps ensure that the results of research in sustainable agriculture are disseminated throughout South Texas and beyond. This integrated approach includes an outreach component that provides: • Essential outreach opportunities for applied research • Exceptional community linkages for Community-Based Participatory Research • Robust extension and outreach components for integrated, extramural research projects • Ample experiential learning and employment opportunities for UTRGV students
