  1. SunflowerHelianthus annuus Growth habit Sunflowers are flowering annual herbaceous plants. Most can grow to be 8-15 feet tall, although there are dwarfing cultivars. Their flower heads are large (8-12 inches) with yellow ray florets and dark brown disc florets. Many species of pollinators, including bees and butterflies, are under stress from the use of insecticides and from the planting of fewer food sources. The Pollinator Friendly Garden Project seeks to educate the public about the need for pollinators in nature and agriculture and to promote the planting of pollinator friendly plants throughout the country in both the commercial environment and home garden. By planting this flower species, you are helping in a nationwide program to preserve our pollinators. Growing Instructions Sunflowers prefer full sun conditions and well-drained, non-acidic soil. Fertilizing will benefit these plants. They should be well watered but can withstand periods of drought. Sunflowers are tolerant to heat but die after frosting. Spacing will depend on the cultivar you chose, ranging from 6 inches to three feet. When planting from containers, plant at the same depth as the pots.

  2. Illustration of how the signs can be placed.

  3. Why? A sign placed on the benches near the plants will help the consumers better understand the types of plants that will be best for a pollinator friendly garden. It makes it easy to find the plants and draws attention to them. This is more effective than simply handing out lists of plants . In addition, it provides cheerful advertisement to the plants themselves; perhaps enticing consumers who are not interested in the pollinator friendly program and just want plants for their home. It also provides a follow-up to the front display, which consumers may forget about during their shopping trip and provides helpful information about the plants in question, such as what the mature plants will look like and how to care for them successfully. It extends the Pollinator Friendly message throughout the store, in a more thorough way than banners do. It also helps by showing just how easy plant a pollinator friendly garden can be - no special plants are needed, just certain ordinary plants.
