  2. Objective: The purpose of our curriculum night is to provide you with the skills your child will be learning in Quarter Two.

  3. Mathematics

  4. Q2 Math Standards: • Division of whole numbers. • Add/Subtract Fractions with Unlike Denominators • Interpret a Fraction as a Division Problem • Extend Understandings of Multiplying a Fraction or Whole Number by a Fraction, Scaling (Resizing),and Word Problems with Multiplying Fractions • Divide Unit Fractions by Whole Numbers and • Whole Numbers by Fractions • Recognize Volume of Solid Figures

  5. Math Example Part 1: Multiple-Choice, Short answer, Equation Response, Graphic Response, and Multiple Select.

  7. Math Example Part 2: Constructed Response.

Reading RL 2 Determine a theme of a story, drama, or poem from details in the text, including how characters in a story or drama respond to challenges or how the speaker in a poem reflects upon a topic; summarize the text. RL 3 Compare and contrast two or more characters, settings, or events in a story or drama, drawing on specific details in the text (how characters interact). RL 4 Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative language such as metaphors and similes.

Reading RL 5 Explain how a series of chapters, scenes, or stanzas fits together to provide the overall structure of a particular story, drama, or poem RL 6 Describe how a narrator’s or speaker’s point of view influences how events are described. RI 1 Quote accurately from a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text. RI 5 Compare/contrast the overall structure of events, ideas, Concepts, or information in two or more texts (chronology, Cause/effect, problem/solution comparison of events).

  10. Reading RI 7 Draw on information from multiple print or digital sources, demonstrating the ability to locate an answer to a question quickly or to solve a problem efficiently. RI 8 Explain how an author uses reasons and evidence to support particular points in a text, identifying which reasons and evidence support which point. RI 9 Integrate information from several texts on the same topic in order to write or speak about the subject knowledgeably. RI 2 Determine two or more main ideas of a text and explain how they are supported by key details; summarize the text. RI 3 Explain the relationships or interactions between two or more individuals, events, ideas, or concepts in historical, scientific, or technical text based on specific information in the text.

  11. Reading Foundational Skills RF 3 Know and apply grade-level phonics and analysis skills in decoding words. Rf 4 Read with sufficient accuracy and fluency To support comprehension.

  12. Grammar/Language L 1 Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking. Conjunctions, prepositions , interjections, perfect verb tenses, nouns, subject/verb agreement (function and form). L 2 Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English Capitalization, punctuation, and spelling when writing. L 4 Determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning words and phrases including context clues and reference materials.

  13. Writing W1 – Write opinion pieces on topics or texts, supporting a point of view with reasons and information. W2 – Writing informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas and information clearly.

  14. Writing W3 – Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, descriptive details, and clear event sequences. W7 – Conduct short research projects that use several sources to build knowledge through investigation of different aspects of a topic.

Science Q2 • Chapter 4 TN Ready Standards • Describe the effects of the oceans on weather • and climate. • Explain how mountains affect weather and • climate. • Compare the climates of coastal and inland • areas at similar latitudes to demonstrate the • ocean’s impact on weather and • climate. • Differentiate between sea and land breezes • Recognize the leeward and windward sides of mountain ranges. • Understand how the climate varies on each side. Identify the • rain shadow. • Natural events that impact the Earth • (eathquakes, volcanoes).

Science Q2 • Chapter 3 TN Ready Standards • Research, analyze compare and contrast the physical characteristics of the planets based on their composition, distance from the sun and apparent motion. • Compare and contrast the inner planets and outer planets. • Understand how stars are created, characterization of stars and the life span of a star. • Select the appropriate tool to use when identifying constellations.

Social Studies • Q2 We will be discussing Reconstruction after the Civil War,Industrialism and leading into Westward Expansion. • Items we will be covering during the Reconstruction are as follows: • 13th, 14th and 15th Amendments • Presidential vs. Congressional Reconstruction • Impeachment of Andrew Johnson • Radical Republicans • Military Reconstruction • Resistance to rights for African Americans • Tennessee Constitutional Convention of 1870 • Election of Rutherford B. Hayes/end of Reconstruction • Yellow fever in Tennessee • Election of African Americans to the General Assembly

Social Studies • We will be discussing the following items during the Westward Expansion: • Efforts to industrialize Tennessee • New patterns of immigration to the United States • Nativism and life for immigrants • Gilded Age politics • Working conditions in factories/child labor • Labor unions/Samuel Gompers • Key business leaders, inventors, and entrepreneurs • 1897 Centennial Exposition • Imperialism • Spanish American War • Goals and achievements of the Progressive Era • Impact of Jim Crow laws
