Olivia & Douglas • Had a strong, loving relationship • “I wouldn't’t like to leave him. Four months it seems an eternity. We haven’t been together so very long” (pg.28) • “As always, he was sitting up very straight; his nose was straight, so was his high forehead…he was noble and fair” (pg. 14)
Olivia & India • Olivia does not socialize in India, and the only contact she has is Douglas and some of his colleagues • “She had by that time been in Satipur for several months and was already beginning to get bored” (pg.12)
Olivia & Douglas • Their relationship grows farther and farther apart as their time in India increases. The relationship deteriorates gradually, not suddenly. • “Olivia had still not told Douglas about the Nawab’s picnic” (pg. 49)
Olivia and India • The relationship between Olivia and India grows as she spends more time there • This is because she meets people that she can socialize with, such as the Nawab and Harry.
Who or What is Responsible For These Changes? • Olivia is all alone in India with no other friends, so she seeks companionship with the Nawab and Harry, both of which Douglas do not like. • Douglas is constantly at work, and Olivia doesn’t have anything else to do other than socializing with the Nawab and Harry.
Are the relationships disintegrating or improving? • The relationship between Olivia and Douglas is disintegrating over time because she starts having an affair with the Nawab when she cannot get pregnant with Douglas’s child.
