SCOR/IODE Data Publication Activity • 2006 Summit participants recommended a Panel on DOIs for data publishing. • However, there was no money available to do the activity. • In early 2008, I began a discussion with Cisco Werner, Roy Lowry and others about what we might do and Roy told me that IODE might have funding for this kind of activity. • IODE hosted a meeting in June 2008, at which the previously mentioned report was produced. • In October 2008, SCOR budgeted $10,000 for activities on data publication in 2009. • Cisco Werner and I hosted a lunch meeting of ocean science journal editors at AGU in December 2008 and I gave a presentation about our activity at the AGU meeting. • A few weeks ago, Roy Lowry and Gwen Moncoiffe from BODC, Peter Wiebe from BCO-DMO, Michael Diepenbroek from WDC-MARE, and Peter Pissierssens from IODE met in Oostende to develop two use cases for data publication (see next slide).
Two Use Cases Creating data publications from existing and future holdings of national data centers. BODC is developing this use case. Providing the “digital backbone” for traditional journal publications. BCO-DMO is developing this use case. These pilot projects have been designed to test the processes for data publication in the two cases mentioned above, so that the approaches described in the SCOR/IODE report can be refined and implemented more broadly.
