Space Race • Sputnik: • First Satellite sent into Space 1957. • U.S.S.R wins THAT Space Race • National Defense Education Act: • Devote money to Science and Math Education Yuri Gagarin- U.S.S.R.   3. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eGI7VymjSho Nuclear Power Plants • Nuclear Energy: • Developed after WW2 • Seen as cleaner and more efficient. • 1979: Disaster at Three Mile Island • 1986: Chernobyl explosion in U.S.S.R. • Three Mile Island: • Located in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania • March 28, 1979 – nuclear reactor malfunctioned. • 100,000 evacuated • Workers sent home. • Lead to stricter security • Fewer plants built.

New Technology • Television: • Will lead to more anti-war protest. • More people have access to them. • Microwaves: 1954 • First in homes in 1967 • Faster/efficient cooking - women freer to go to work. • Rise in Childcare • Computers: • Developed in 1939 – the size of a ROOM! Hewlett Packard Founded • First desk tops in 1970s • Rise of Silicon Valley, CA – home to many computer companies.

  5. Microchip • Small devise – stores a lot of information • Computer memory • Cell phone memory card • Bluetooth • Appliances • Internet • Microchips allow convenience (smaller) without sacrifice.

President Kennedy • Bay of Pigs: (April 1961) • Failed invasion by secret ops. • Communist Cuba led by Fidel Castro– allies with the U.S.S.R. • Other CIA attempts to overthrow Castro failed… badly. • Cuban Missile Crisis: (October 1962) • U.S.S.R. Hiding Missiles in Cuba • 90 miles from FL. • Kennedy orders blockade. • No Warfare, but fear. • Closest we came to a nuclear war.

Kennedy Assassination • November 22, 1963 • Dallas, Texas • Killed by Lee Harvey Oswald – killed days later • Shot by civilian when transferring jails • Zapruder Film • A recording of the entire event! • Helped with investigation. • American Democracy was sturdy – we survived this crisis! • Lyndon B. Kennedy Legacy • New Frontier • Programs to improve America • Programs to rebuild urban areas, aid education, and medical care for aged. • Established the Peace Corps. • Volunteers to go to less-developed areas • Teach English, provide health care, teach farming methods • Still a huge program today

Johnson’s Great Society • Great Society: • War on poverty • Starts programs like: Head Start (education for underprivileged preschoolers) • VISTA (Peace corps and AmeriCorps) • Help the poorest regions. • Medicare and Medicaid: • Medicare – healthcare to those over 65 • Medicaid – healthcare for those on welfare

Nixon Presidency • Nixon Presidency successes- • Soldiers out of Vietnam • Opened China (1972) • Henry Kissinger = helped with negotiations • Discovered there is more than one type of Communism • First President to visit U.S.S.R. (1972) • Talked with Soviet Leader Brezhnev and signed the first Salt treaties • Lower missile levels to that of 1972 for 5 years. • Fought stagflation – high unemployment and high interest rates • Resulted from funding social programs during LBJ presidency • Increase in international trade competition • Flood of new workers (the baby boomers are grown up now).

  11. Watergate • Series of robberies by a group known as the Plumbers. (WORST ROBBERS EVER!) • Wiretapped the Democrat’s phones. • The actual robberies took place over two night -June 1972. • Were caught on the second break-in • Eventually discovered that Nixon had TAPED conversations discussing the break-ins. • Supreme Court orders Nixon to hand them over in Nixon v. United States. (one of many court case). • Nixon resigned in 1974 when tapes were released. • He was guilty. • Ford will Pardon Nixon

Role of Woodward and Bernstein • Reporters for the Washington Post • Wrote several articles about Watergate • Had a secret informer • “Deep Throat” • Follow the money • Was an inside informer who provide information to help with investigation • Articles led to a fall in Nixon’s popularity • Led to a senate investigation. Mark Felt ended a 30 year mystery when he announced he was deep throat on his death bed
