Key facts • Module Team: Prof. Phil Holmes; Prof. Charlie Cai • Semester: 1 • Credits: 10 • Pre-requisites: • Formal: LUBS1240 Mathematics and Statistics for Business and Economics 1, LUBS2200 Corporate Finance • Or: • MATH1510 Financial Mathematics 1 and MATH2515 Financial Mathematics 2. • Informal: Need to be comfortable with quantitative aspects

Focus of the module • An introduction to the types of derivatives, derivative markets, purpose of derivatives • Futures and Forwards • Mechanics of futures markets • Determination of futures and forward prices • Interest Rate Markets • Options and Option valuation • Options Strategies • The binomial model and the Black-Scholes model of option pricing

  4. Assessment • The module is assessed by a two hour examination. • Exam Structure • Two sections: • Section A: MCQ – 60 marks • Section B: Longer answers – 40 marks

Student Feedback Last Year • I have really enjoyed the module mostly due to the content • Lecturer is very engaging and actively tried to bring complex notions to a more understandable level • Thank you very much really enjoyed the module • A very useful module • Good content and overall gives a good insight into FD • It has helped me decide to do a masters in FD • It has enhanced my interest & knowledge in the financial markets

  6. Student Feedback Previous Years • All staff including lecturers and tutors explain the questions clearly for us. So it makes this subject not terrible. And so helps us gain confidence for the exam. • Very interesting module, easy to follow and inspired thinking. • Content was new but not too difficult to understand. Being in contact with researchers/scholars helped me to understand the theoretical sides of the topics.

  7. Last Year Students’ Advice to YOU! • Attend all seminars and practice beforehand • Do the exercises • Good module but does require some mathematical knowledge and skill • Advisable for those interested in the financial market • Go over your seminar answers
