  1. NRL Monterey Support ofCARMA-IV Jeffrey S. Reid and Edward J. Hyer 7 Grace Hopper St., Stop 2 Monterey, CA 93907 jeffrey.reid@nrlmry.navy.mil; (831) 656-4725 Edward.hyer@nrlmry.navy.mil; (831) 656-4023 University of Washington; March 3, 2007

  2. Overview • Biomass burning forecasting • Other support resources • Available instrumentation and trials • Research interests

  3. FLAMBÉ Method: Remote Sensing Fire Detection (ABBA-MODIS) Emission Product NAAPS Transport 4D-Data Assimilation? Microphysics and Radiation Routines (Reality Check)

  4. Southern California Fires

  5. Jul, Aug, & Sept Fire Activity MODIS: UM GOES: WF_ABBA

  6. Biomass Burning Support • Dedicated FLAMBE Page with observations, satellite and model data • Daily forecasts (Reid, Hyer, Walker) • GOES WF_ABBA and MODIS monitoring • NAAPS for large plumes. • Daily AOTs from MODIS. GASP product for up to minute qualitative imagery • Also use natural hazards hand analysis and IAFC

  7. Other Support • Auto archive satellite products from NRPTE • If needed, can arrange for auto-archive geostationary products too. • Ground support? Coordinate with Qing?

  8. COAMPS and NexSat http://www.nrlmry.navy.mil/coamps-web/web/mbay But, FNMOC is shutting down machines. http://www.nrlmry.navy.mil/NEXSAT.html http://www.nrlmry.navy.mil/sat_products.html

  9. Radiometers • Kipp and Zonen solar CMP 22 pyranometers available (zenith and nadir) • IR radiometers on deployment • Investigating dual band K&Z UV-AB-T

  10. K&Z UV-AB-T

  11. Drop Sondes • Yankee Scientific SBIR product • P,T, RH, W, SST • 4” with parachute, 14” with spinner • Requires Twin Otter mod for manual release • Needs GPS repeater installed on TO • Can track one at a time. • Has Irridium satcom option • 10/100T or db9 communication

  12. Other goodies… • CAPS 2-D capability: Nava now can log 2-D probe, but requires additional computer. • Updated video system (RADD, TCPIP, or VCR) • Air Data Probe. Integrated with RADD • Pelas white light system: Deploy to MBARI periodically for fly byes? Western Flyer, Point Sur? • 2 3-l nephs, SMPS, SO2, O3, ceilometer, licor, APS, 2 (4?) met stations, visiometer, automatic cameras, TEOM, DRUM, DustTrack, AERONET, all sky camera, lidar(?).

  13. What we hope to get out of this • Help, develop hygroscopicity scheme for NAAPS and COAMPS. • Try new drop-sonde technology and incorporate data into COAMPS. • Complete evaluation of CAPS and Pelas systems. • Doyle’s request: Validation across coast lines. Does 3 km help?

  14. FSSP versus CAPS

  15. FSSP Response
